Matt Hardy was born on September 23, 1974, in Cameron, North Carolina and he is a professional wrestler currently signed to AEW.

Hardy’s career began in 1992 when he performed on the North Carolina independent scene as High Voltage. In 1994 he got his big break when he began appearing for WWF as an enhancement talent. His first match was against Nikolai Volkoff before going on to wrestle names like Crush, Razor Ramon, Hakushi, Owen Hart, the imposter Undertaker, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, and “The Ringmaster” Steve Austin.

In 1997, along with his brother, Jeff, they created their own promotion OMEGA Championship Wrestling. Wrestlers such as Shannon Moore, Joey Matthews, Christian York, Joey Abs, C. W. Anderson, and Shane Helms all regularly appeared for promotion before it folded in 1999 when the brothers were signed to WWF full-time a year prior.

Matt and Jeff signed with WWF in 1998 and quickly established themselves as a vibrant and exciting duo due to their high-flying and innovative offence. Managed by Michael Hayes, the duo defeated the Acolytes to win their first Tag Team Championships the following year. They then entered a career-defining feud with Edge and Christian by winning the first-ever tag team ladder match at No Mercy.

The team increased in popularity with the addition of Lita. The trio became known as Team Xtreme due to their death-defying moves and style. At WrestleMania 2000 they faced Edge and Christian and the Dudley Boyz in a triple-threat tag team ladder match, which to the creation of the TLC match. All three teams clashed in the first-ever Tables, Ladders and Chairs match at SummerSlam.

They continued to thrive in the tag team division winning the titles from Edge and Christian in a steel cage match. That same year, Hardy found singles success by winning the Hardcore Championship and then the European Championship in 2001. Toward the end of the year, the Hardy Boyz began to argue and split up following a match at Vengeance, which Jeff won.

After the breakup of the team, Matt reinvented himself as Matt Hardy Version 1.0 – an internet-inspired gimmick in which he would regularly reveal interesting facts about himself called Mattfacts. During this time he defeated Billy Kidman to win the Cruiserweight title and successfully defended it against Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania XIX.

In 2005 he entered a deep-rooted rivalry with Edge upon discovering he was having a real-life affair with Lita. They had several intense matches and the feud culminated in a Loser Leaves Raw ladder match, which Edge won.

The Hardy Boyz reunited the following year and won the tag team titles for the sixth time. IN 2007, Hardy entered a feud with MVP over the US title and saw them compete in a variety of different contests such as a basketball game, an arm wrestling contest, a chess match, and a boxing match in which Hardy faced Evander Holyfield and in 2008, Hardy defeated MVP to win the United States Championship at Backlash. That same year he also won the ECW Championship from Mark Henry marking his first world heavyweight championship win.

Hardy left WWE in 2010 and joined TNA but was released from the company only a few months later. He returned to the independent circuit where he appeared for ROH and restarted OMEGA.

In 2014, upon re-signing with TNA the brothers united again and won the World Tag Team Championships. The following year, Matt went solo and won TNA World Heavyweight Championship from Drew Galloway [Drew McIntyre]. During the title run, he entered a feud with Jeff that left him broken. Hardy began using acting strangely, dressing in elegant robes and talking in a bizarre accent.

The new character introduced the Broken Universe – an outlandish and cinematic world that features, dilapidated boats, the lake of reincarnation, and teleportation. The gimmick reinvented Hardy’s career and became a hugely popular concept. Hardy left TNA and appeared in ROH defeating the Young Bucks to win the ROH World Tag Team Championships before making a sensational return to WWE at WrestleMania 33 to win the Raw Tag Team Championships.

Hardy reintroduced the Broken Matt character during a feud with Bray Wyatt that resulted in them teaming together as The Deleters of Worlds. Hardy left WWE in 2020 and joined All Elite Wrestling bringing the Broken character with him. He joined the Elite to defeat The Inner Circle in the first-ever Stadium Stampede match. During the match, Hardy was repeatedly dunked in a pool, which acted as a version of the Lake of Reincarnation, and saw his previous characters resurface.

Since then, he has managed Private Party and the Butcher and the Blade and was joined in AEW by Jeff and reformed the Hardy Boyz once again.
