Matt Hardy Recalls Vince McMahon Changing His Mind On Broken Character In WWE

Matt Hardy opened up about how Vince McMahon eventually changed his mind about allowing him to portray the popular Broken character in WWE.

In a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, Hardy reminisced about his return to WWE in 2017 alongside his brother Jeff Hardy and how McMahon initially wanted them to reunite as the Hardy Boyz, without continuing with the Broken character that had garnered immense popularity.

Hardy revealed that during a conversation with Triple H, there was a suggestion of initially revisiting the classic Hardy Boyz run and then exploring the Broken character later on.

I remember talking to Triple H and he said ‘Maybe we could do a good Hardy Boyz run, kind of a throwback to the original WWE Hardy Boyz and then maybe we get into the Broken Matt Hardy in a little bit.’

However, McMahon had a different vision and insisted on reintroducing them solely as the Hardy Boyz.

And then Vince [McMahon] is like ‘They’re back in WWE, they’re the Hardy Boyz.’

It wasn’t until later, when Hardy eventually debuted as Woken Matt Hardy in WWE, that McMahon had a change of heart. In their meeting to discuss the character, McMahon expressed his surprise at the relentless chants of “delete” from the fans. This marked a significant turning point for Hardy, as McMahon acknowledged the demand for the Broken character and allowed him to embrace the persona that had captivated the audience.

And then later on, whenever I did do Woken Matt Hardy, the WWE version. It’s so funny because we sat down, we talked for 30 minutes about what the character was or whatever. He says, ‘Well they keep doing, delete, delete, delete, delete, they won’t stop that sh*t. I guess we have to give it to them.’ So that became just part of who I am now.

Reflecting on the experience, Hardy expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to portray the Woken Matt Hardy character in WWE. He also emphasised how the character has now become an integral part of his identity.
