CM Punk: 2022 Biography, News, Net Worth, Family
Phillip Jack Brooks, better known as CM Punk, began wrestling in the late 1990’s with his friends in a backyard promotion called ‘Lunatic Wrestling Federation’. The promotion saw some success in the Illinois area.
After the LWF folded, Punk began training at the Steel Dominion wrestling school and performed for their shows as well as other independent promotions around the US.
In 2002, CM Punk joined Ring of Honor, where he quickly grew in popularity due to his charismatic personality and straight-edge gimmick which reflected his real life. He had classic matches against the likes of AJ Styles, Samoa Joe, and Bryan Danielson. By 2004, he had entered the main event scene and was finally able to capture the ROH World Championship in June 2005, defeating Austin Aries.
Soon after reaching the top of ROH, CM Punk moved on to WWE, entering the developmental promotion, Ohio Valley Wrestling in September 2005. He remained there for a year before being called up to the main roster and being assigned to WWE’s version of ECW in June 2006.
CM Punk initially went on a winning streak defeating ECW originals like Justin Credible and Stevie Richards as well as Matt Striker and Mike Knox. Punk was a popular act in ECW and went on to represent the brand at Survivor Series, the Royal Rumble, and the Money in the Bank Ladder match at WrestleMania 23.
After several attempts, Punk captured the ECW Heavyweight Championship from John Morrison on September 1st, 2007. He held onto it for 143 days before losing it to Chavo Guerrero.
Despite the loss, the Straight-Edge Superstar’s career was on the up as at WrestleMania 24 he won that year’s Money in the Bank match. On June 23rd, 2008, he was drafted to Raw and went on to cash in the MITB briefcase the next week on Edge to win the World Heavyweight title for the first of three reigns.
In 2009, CM Punk turned heel, claiming his straight-edge lifestyle made him morally superior to the rest of the WWE roster. He formed the Straight Edge Society with Luke Gallows, Serena, and Joey Mercury. The group lasted for several months before Serena was released and Mercury was injured, effectively bringing it to an end.
Punk then moved on to take over The Nexus from Wade Barrett. With that group, he entered into a feud with Randy Orton which ended after The Viper took out all of the faction with Punt Kicks before defeating Punk himself in a Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules.
Now on his own, CM Punk set his sights on John Cena and the WWE Championship. After becoming the Number 1 Contender and intention to challenge for the title at the 2011 edition of Money in the Bank, Punk revealed that his contract was set to expire on the same night and claimed he would leave the company with the belt. It was also during this feud that he cut the infamous ‘Pipe Bomb’ promo where he blasted WWE and how it was run.
At Money in the Bank, the Straight Edge Saviour defeated Cena in a classic match, and, true to his word, walked out with the title. However, his absence only lasted a few weeks before he came back to continue his rivalry with Cena, who had been crowned the WWE Champion after Punk’s walkout. Punk defeated Cena at SummerSlam to become the Undisputed WWE Champion, but it only lasted for a few minutes as Alberto Del Rio cashed in his MITB contract to take the title.
CM Punk regained the title at Survivor Series that November, beginning his historic 434-day championship reign. Initially an anti-establishment hero, the star was at odds with Triple H and then Raw GM John Laurinaitis for several months, with Laurinaitis unsuccessfully trying his best to find someone to take the belt from Punk.
things changed at Raw 1000 in July 2012 when Punk attacked a returning Dwayne Johnson after The Rock announced he would challenge for the title at the following year’s Royal Rumble match. Punk took on Paul Heyman as his manager was able to hold onto the title until then with help from The Shield, who interfered in several matches on his behalf. Ultimately, though, The Rock defeated Punk at the Royal Rumble, preventing him from main eventing WrestleMania.
Instead, CM Punk faced The Undertaker at WrestleMania 29 in a losing effort. Soon after, he ended his partnership with Heyman and turned face once again. In his last few months with WWE, he feuded with the likes of Ryback, Brock Lesnar, and, with the aid of Bryan Danielson, The Wyatt Family.
His final feud in the company saw him taking on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon’s Authority faction. He defeated Kane several times, and in his last appearance for WWE was eliminated from the 2014 Royal Rumble match by The Devil’s Favourite Demon.
Following the event, Punk walked out on the company citing untreated health issues and unhappiness with the direction of his career, saying he had been left with “zero passion” for wrestling.
During the ensuing hiatus from pro wrestling, CM Punk tried his hand at several other careers. This included co-writing several comic issues for series such as Marvel’s Drax, Masters of Kung-Fu, and Thor as well as DC’s Strange Sports Stories.
He also made appearances in movies such as Girl On The Third Floor and TV shows including Stephen Amell’s Heels.
During this time, CM Punk had a short-lived MMA career, losing two fights in UFC to Mike Jackson and Mickey Gall. The loss against Jackson was later declared a No Contest due to Punk’s opponent testing positive for marijuana.
In August 2021, CM Punk made his triumphant return to wrestling, debuting for AEW in Chicago on Rampage. He had his first match in seven years at that year’s All Out, defeating Darby Allin. this kicked off a winning streak that lasted until February 2022 when MJF defeated him on Dynamite – although Punk got the win in their rematch at Revolution shortly afterwards.
On May 29th, 2022 at Double or Nothing, Punk won the AEW World Championship but had to relinquish it days later due to injury. He regained the title shortly after his return, defeating Jon Moxley at All Out.
However, at the post-All Out media scrum, Punk blasted several AEW stars in a rant many regarded as unprofessional. After he returned to his locker room, he was confronted by Kenny Omega and The Young Bucks, leading to a brawl and the suspensions of all involved. At the time of writing, it is unclear whether Punk will be seen again in the company.
