Kevin Nash Explains Why He Never Wrestled CM Punk

Kevin Nash explains why an angle from 2011 was never fully followed up on.

Following the events that took place at Money in the Bank 2011, where new WWE Champion CM Punk left the company in storyline with the title, a new champion needed to be crowned. An 8-man tournament was announced to crown the new champion, which was won by Rey Mysterio. However, that same evening, John Cena would defeat Mysterio to become the new World Champion, with Punk making his return to the company after the bell.

With an Undisputed Champion needing to be crowned, a winner-takes-all match between Punk and Cena was set for SummerSlam, with Triple H serving as guest referee. Despite Punk defeating Cena once again, the Best in the World would not walk out of SummerSlam as champion. Instead, Nash would attack Punk after the bell and allow Alberto Del Rio to successfully cash in his Money in the Bank contract.

With Nash interfering in Punk’s title match and a subsequent number one contenders match, many believed that the Hall of Famer was being set up for an eventual clash with the Chicago native. However, the match never materialised. In a recent interview, Nash has explained why.

Speaking on the Kliq This podcast, the Hall of Famer stated how Punk got under Triple H’s skin back in 2011 and wanted the match instead:

“It’s funny now that Vince has taken a backseat to this whole thing, that I see Paul, he owns it now. Like, he has ownership of that company as far as, when they say he’s creative. His demeanor, he is in completely control of that situation. There has never been anybody of his talent in the ring…he was with us and we were all ruthless and we were all very driven for our success.

It’s such a different Paul now. When I was supposed to wrestle Punk, he got under Triple H’s skin so bad. Paul just came up to me and said, ‘I’m going to beat him. You’re not going to wrestle him. I’m beating him.’ Cool. That’s why me and Punk never wrestled. He made the call, ‘I gotta beat this f*cker.’”

At the next pay-per-view, Night of Champions, Triple H would defeat CM Punk in a no disqualification match.

Kevin Nash Hated WWE Match

Although Nash is a former World Champion and Hall of Famer, he did not enjoy everything he was a part of while wrestling for the company. During an earlier edition of his podcast, Kevin Nash revealed which WWE match he hated the most.
