AEW All In London at Wembley Stadium goes down on Sunday, August 27th, and looks to be a historic event for several reasons.
The event marks the first time the promotion has traveled to the UK, the return of professional wrestling to the stadium since WWE SummerSlam 1992, and looks to attract over 70’000 fans.
On the April 5th episode of Dynamite, AEW President Tony Khan, Adam Cole, and Nigel McGuinness made the huge announcement that not only was the promotion embarking on their first trip to the UK, but they are holding the show at Wembley Stadium.
It was a historic move as it marks the first event of its kind to take place in the stadium in over 30 years, but it was also a massive risk as the venue holds over 80,000 people. However, the high risk has resulted in high rewards as ticket sales have already made the show a massive success.
Upon pre-sale release, the show sold more than 36,000 tickets making $4.7 million in revenue and setting AEW’s records for attendance and live gate in the process. Ticket sales and revenue have continued to rise, which is especially amazing as no matches have been announced.
So, here are five dream matches we like to see at the history-making event.
5. Bryan Danielson vs. Nigel McGuinness
For those who don’t know back in the mid to late 2000s Bryan Danielson and Nigel McGuinness had one of the most intense and brutal rivalries in professional wrestling. The aggression displayed against one another in their matches is off the charts and at times difficult to watch (just check out their 2006 classic at ROH Unified) but it was hard-hitting, expertly-executed technical wrestling at its best.
Now, this match is definitely in the dream category as Danielson currently has a broken arm and McGuinness is retired (although he has refused to rule out an in-ring return) but it would really special to see them go at it one final time in front of the Brit’s home supporters.
4. Sayara vs. Jamie Hayter
The two women have been locked in a rivalry ever since Saraya debuted in AEW and although they have clashed in a tag team and three-way match they have never met in singles action. To see the two Brits go one-on-one at Wembley Stadium in front of one of the biggest professional wrestling crowds the UK has ever seen will undoubtedly be an amazing, emotional, and career-defining achievement for them.
3. Chris Jericho vs. Sting
It was amazing to think that up until a few months ago the two wrestling icons had not been in the ring together at the same time. In the run-up to Forbidden Door Jericho and Sting began a baseball bat-assisted rivalry that led to them having two trios tag team matches together, but the money is in having these two square off one-on-one for the first time ever. The historical significance of having the two legitimate professional wrestling legends in a never-seen-before match at an event of this magnitude would be a spectacle worthy of the occasion.
2. CM Punk & FTR vs. The Elite
Ever since CM Punk’s return to AEW talk about him having a match with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks amongst fans and pundits alike has been rife. It is no secret that Punk and the Elite have some issues they need to resolve and there is no better place to do it than inside a wrestling ring.
Their real-life animosity stems from Punk’s infamous scorched earth promo at the All Out media scrum in which he lambasted their EVP status before calling them children. An alleged altercation went down backstage that resulted in both parties being stripped of their respective championships and suspended from the promotion.
Upon serving their suspensions and returning to AEW the Elite mocked Punk on Dynamite who then returned the favor during his sensational comeback on the debut of AEW Collision. If Tony Khan could find a way to turn the hostility between them into a storyline and ultimately one of the most eagerly-awaited matches in company history it would be perfect to go down at their biggest show to date.
1. Kenny Omega vs. Will Ospreay III
Omega and Ospreay set the wrestling world on fire with their classic match in Japan at NJPW Wrestle Kingdom 17 earlier this year. Inside the Tokyo Dome, the two clashed for the IWGP United States Championship in an early match-of-the-year contender. The outcome of the match saw Omeaga draw first blood and defeat Opreay for the title.
They replicated the magic a few months later at Forbidden Door in Omega’s home country of Canada where Oespreay was able level to the playing field and regain the championship. Now, tied at one apiece in the series there is of course a myriad of speculation surrounding a third highly-anticipated rematch, and with All In London looming it seems only fitting that they have their final battle in Orspreay’s hometown.
