Former WWE Champion Out Of Action Until 2024

Rey Mysterio Randy Orton Drew McIntyre Ricochet WWE Raw

After undergoing knee surgery, Rey Mysterio is believed to be out of action for the rest of 2023.

The November 10th episode of SmackDown saw Santos Escobar deliver a brutal attack to Rey Mysterio after Mysterio thwarted Escobar’s attempt to attack Carlito. On November 14th, the WWE Hall of Famer took to social media to reveal that he’d undergone knee surgery and would seek revenge on Escobar when he was able to return to action.

According to a new report from Haus of Wrestling, Mysterio is expected to be out of action for 6-8 weeks, placing his return timeframe after the New Year. Nick Hausman writes:

“Haus of Wrestling has learned that Mysterio has been working through a torn meniscus for about three months. The injury has slowly worsened, so he agreed to lose the WWE United States Championship to Paul and participate in the beatdown angle before heading off for his knee operation. He is expected to be out of action for around six to eight weeks while he recovers and will likely resume his feud with Escobar when he returns.”

Hausman notes that this return timeframe should allow Mysterio to come back in time for the Royal Rumble and the build to WrestleMania 40 in Philadelphia.

Rey Mysterio Lost The WWE United States Championship To Logan Paul

At Crown Jewel on November 4th, Logan Paul successfully defeated Mysterio for the United States Championship, albeit with assistance from a member of his entourage who handed him brass knuckles during the bout.

In the middle of the match, Mysterio looked set for a scary landing as he attempted a springboard moonsault, and Logan Paul has received much praise for catching the WWE Hall of Famer and saving him from injury.

Since becoming United States Champion, Logan Paul has made news with his US Title belt, not only posing nude with the title around his waist but also trying to pawn the prestigious prize for $100,000.

A further update has been provided on November 15th by PWInsider. It is stated that the heel turn by Escobar was not accelerated by the injury to Mysterio and had the Hall of Famer not been injured, Mysterio vs. Escobar would have taken place on subsequent live events.
