Óscar Gutiérrez better known as Rey Mysterio is a professional wrestler currently signed to WWE. Born on December 11th, 1974 in Chula Vista, California, he is widely regarded as the best luchador of all time and credited as inspiring multiple generations of wrestlers.

Mysterion began his wrestling journey in 1989 when he was just 14 years old. He trained in lucha libre under his uncle Rey Misterio Sr and competed at small shows in Mexico. In 1992 he made his debut in AAA as Rey Mysterio Jr where he quickly made a name for himself as a must-watch up-and-comer.

In 1995 he got the chance to bring his revolutionary style to the States when Paul Heyman brought Mysterio and Psicosis to ECW. The two tore it up on multiple occasions for the promotion and his series with Juventud Guerrera wowed audiences.

In 1996 Mysterio signed with WCW and radicalised the Cruiserweight division. He defeated Dean Maleko to win the title, his first in the States. After matches with Ultimo Dragon, Lord Regal, Super Calo, and Konan he truly put himself on the map with his match against Eddie Guererro at 1997’s Halloween Havoc.

Mysterio would continue his feud with Guerrero and his faction the Latino World Order eventually having to join the group after losing to his rival. During this time he captured the Cruiserweight title another three times.

A feud with the nWo followed which resulted in Mysterio and his partner Billy Kidman losing a Hair vs. Mask match against Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. Having lost the match, Mysterio was forced to remove his mask.

Mysterio then went on a giant-killing spree, defeating the likes of Nash, Bam Bam Bigalow, and Scott Norton before winning the Cruiserweight title for the fifth time. He then entered a feud with the Four Horsemen. After unsuccessfully challenging Ric Flair for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship he took on and defeated his stablemates Chris Benoit and Dean Malenko to win the WCW World Tag Team Championship with Kidman.

In 1999, alongside Eddie Guerrero, Konan, and Kidman Mysterio formed the heel faction the Filthy Animals. Mysterio became a two-time WCW World Tag Team Champion with Konan. Following some time away due to injury, Mysterio returned in 2000 and teamed once again with Kidman.

The duo then feuded with the Natural Born Thrillers, the Harris Brothers, Team Canada, and KroniK. The introduction of the WCW Cruiserweight Tag Team Championships saw them capture the titles on the final episode of Nitro.

Following the closure of WCW, Mysterio went back to Mexico to appear for CMLL for the first time in his career. He returned to the States for IWA Mid-South and the WWC in Puerto Rico.

In 2002, he signed for WWE, and after a series of vignettes, he debuted on SmackDown defeating Chavo Guerrero in his first match for the company. He then entered a feud with Kurt Angle, which saw him lose his first WWE pay-per-view match at SummerSlam.

The feud with Angle continued over the SmackDown Tag Team Championships. Mysterio teamed with Edge while Angle partnered with Benoit. The two teams tore it up at No Mercy before Mysterio and Edge captured the titles in an epic two-out-of-three falls match.

Mysterio won his first WWE singles title in 2003 when he defeated Matt Hardy for the Cruiserweight Championship. He captured the title another two times before going on to form a tag team with Rob Van Dam. The duo on the Tag Team titles at the close of the year. Following an injury to RVD, Mysterio began teaming with Eddie Guerrero and became a three-time Tag Team Champion.

While tag team champions Mysterio faced and defeated Guerrero in a classic opening match of WrestleMania 21. This started a rivalry between the two, which saw Guerrero turn on his partner. The feud saw Guerrero claim he was the biological father of Mysterio’s son Dominik, which resulted in a ladder match for the custody of Dominik at SummerSlam 2005.

Later that year, Mysterio entered a feud with Big Show after Mysterio eliminated Big Show at Survivor Series. This led to a ‘David vs Goliath’ match on SmackDown. After Kane interfered, Mysterio teamed with Batista becoming Tag Team Champion for the fourth time.

In 2006, Mysterio entered the Royal Rumble as the second entrant before going all the way, lasting an incredible sixty-two minutes to win the match.

At WrestleMania 22, Mysterio became the new World Heavyweight Champion defeating Randy Orton and Kurt Angle in an emotionally-charged outing following the tragic passing of Eddie Guerrero. As the champion, he successfully the title against Orton, Angle, JBL, Sabu, and Mark Henry.

Following a lengthy absence due to injury, Mysterio returned to action and into the championship scene, but he was unsuccessful in reclaiming the prize. In 2009, he entered the Intercontinental Championship scene and defeated JBL for the title in just twenty-one seconds at WrestleMania 25.

Later that year he entered a feud with Batista, which revolved around becoming the number-one contender for the World Heavyweight Championship. Mysterio defeated Batista but lost the title match to The Undertaker at the Royal Rumble. The following year he captured the title for the second time defeating Jack Swagger, Big Show, and CM Punk at Fatal 4-Way.

In 2011 Mysterio won a tournament for the vacant WWE Championship to win his first WWE Championship, but his reign was short-lived and he lost the title to John Cena later that night.

Injuries continued to plague his career and he was forced to take several lengthy absences from the company. In 2013 it was announced that he wanted to leave WWE and in 2015, his WWE contract expired, and he left the company after thirteen years.

After leaving WWE he returned to AAA, the US independent circuit, and Lucha Underground. In 2018, Mysterio made a surprise appearance at the Royal Rumble. He then made his NJPW debut, teaming with Jushin Thunder Liger and Hiroshi Tanahashi. He also appeared at All In teaming with Fenix and Bandido in the main event against Kota Ibushi and The Young Bucks.

That same year he made another surprise appearance for WWE, this time at the Greatest Royal Rumble in Saudi Arabia. It was then confirmed Mysterio had signed a new two-year deal with WWE. Upon returning to the company he won the United States Championship becoming the twenty-first WWE Grand Slam Champion in the process.

He began teaming with his son Dominik and became the first-ever father-and-son Tag Team Champion in WWE history. After losing the titles Dominik turned on his father and began berating and goading him into a match. Despite Mysterio’s initial refusal to fight his son, they will clash at WrestleMania 39.

Rey Mysterio will be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in the Class of 2023.
