AEW Full Gear History
The last of AEW’s ‘Big Four’ pay-per-views to be unveiled in November 2019, Full Gear has since gone on to become an All Elite Wrestling staple. The event’s name comes from a segment of Being The Elite of the same where Hangman Adam Page is always in his always in his full ring gear. The first-ever Full Gear was headlined by the Unsanctioned Lights Out match between Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley. The latter debuted at the end Double or Nothing, attacking Omega and Chris Jericho. The bout was initially scheduled for All Out in August but was postponed after the former WWE star sustained an elbow injury.
Meanwhile, Chris Jericho defended the AEW World Championship against Cody Rhodes. The American Nightmare lost the match after his cornerman MJF threw in the towel. The defeat meant that Rhodes could never challenge for the AEW World Title again. This was a stipulation he famously stuck to all the way up to leaving the company in February 2022. The controversial ending to the match sparked a rivalry between MJF and Rhodes, which led to the debut of Wardlow.
The 2020 edition of the event came live from Daily’s Place due to the COVID-19 pandemic. AEW had set up base at the venue in Jacksonville, Florida earlier that year. The show featured the finals of a tournament to decide a new number one contender for the AEW World Championship. On this occasion, Kenny Omega defeated Hangman Adam Page. The tournament has become a regular presence at Full Gear since. Elsewhere, MJF defeated Chris Jericho, and as a result was permitted to join the Inner Circle. It could be argued that it was this win and subsequent fall out which kick-started MJF’s rise to AEW stardom.
The following year Hangman Adam Page finally reached the top of the AEW mountain and defeated Kenny Omega to win the World Championship. Omega wouldn’t wrestle again until August 2022, taking time off to deal with a number of injuries. The show also featured the debut of Jay Lethal and a grudge match between CM Punk and Eddie Kingston. In the finals of the World Championship Eliminator Tournament, Bryan Danielson overcame Miro. The Redeemer was a late edition into the tournament, replacing Jon Moxley who had entered a rehabilitation program for alcohol addiction.
