AEW Potentially Set To Face Future Problems Following Controversial Full Gear Spot

Dave Meltzer has raised concerns about AEW securing a new network deal.

In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter Meltzer specifically highlighted a controversial spot that occurred during the AEW Full Gear event in a Texas Death Match between Adam Page and Swerve Strickland. During the match, Page crawled under Strickland to drink blood dripping from his head.

Meltzer believes that this particular moment could be used as ammunition by the company’s detractors to dissuade networks from pursuing a deal with the promotion due to its controversial nature. He stated:

This is much bigger than a single sponsor. AEW is in its contract year. Let’s just say for the sake of argument that FOX, FX, or ESPN would have interest in AEW given the Wednesday night numbers are excellent. All it takes is sending that tape and finding one key decision-maker who is revolted by it, and the entire deal can be nixed.

Meltzer’s concern is based on recent experiences, such as the NWA and CW situation, where online fans’ backlash affected potential deals. He emphasised that AEW faces even more opposition and vested interests in its failure compared to the NWA. The promotion already deals with WWE loyalists, disgruntled fans, and criticism surrounding Tony Khan‘s financial backing. Meltzer warned that handing ammunition to those who want to see the company fail, especially with this controversial video clip, would be detrimental to the promotion’s image and potential network deals.

While it remains to be seen how this controversy will impact AEW’s negotiations, the promotion will need to address these concerns and handle the situation with caution. AEW’s contract year and the desire to secure a new network deal make it essential for the promotion to navigate potential controversies and ensure they don’t hinder their progress.
