AEW and WWE have been major rivals since Tony Khan‘s promotion was created back in 2019.
Since then the companies have traded verbal jabs on national TV and across social media with each company claiming to be the better of the two.
However, it now appears like WWE will be very thankful for Khan’s promotion as All Elite Wrestling could save WWE from a major lawsuit.
The UFC is currently facing a lawsuit (initially lead by a group of previous fighters) for utilising their market monopoly to reduce staff wages and prevent the growth of competition.
The lawsuit could lead to the UFC settling out of court for “a lot, a lot a lot” of money, however, this could have a major impact on the WWE.
Due to WWE’s merger with UFC under parent company Endeavour and the WWE’s previous history of allegedly harming competition – if the UFC settles out of court or is found guilty at trial it is “almost a guarantee” that the same ruling would then be filled at the WWE.
However, AEW may come to the rescue of Vince McMahon’s promotion.
Speaking on this morning’s Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer would reveal that by looking at WWE’s statements during their recent MLW trial we can predict that the company will use the existence and success of MLW to prove that they do not limit competitors in their market.
Meltzer would state:
“The one thing that is the best defence [for the WWE] and they actually used that in the MLW lawsuit is the success of AEW.
That will be WWE’s defence that ‘we don’t have a monopoly’ and that ‘we don’t keep others from starting up’ because look at AEW.
That’s good on the surface but if you go back and study the issue and look at all the things WWE did regarding AEW when they first started or before they even started. It’s gonna be tougher to prove that they didn’t stay hands off on that.”
There is no reports currently on any planned legal action against WWE however Meltzer reports that should the UFC be found guilty that action against WWE would be almost “guaranteed” due to the upcoming merger.
