Paul Wight Discusses His Role In AEW Match: “You Have To Adjust Your Expectations”

Paul Wight

Paul Wight is very aware of his goals and expectations leading into his upcoming return match on AEW Dynamite.

Wight will reunite with former tag team partner Chris Jericho, Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi to face Powerhouse Hobbs, Kyle Fletcher, Brian Cage and Konosuke Takeshita in a Street Fight that is sponsored by the videogame Like A Dragon Gaiden. As the World’s Largest Athlete is one of the more experienced wrestlers in the match, he is very aware that the match is not about him.

Speaking with TMZ Sports, Wight was first asked if he knew what he was getting himself in for with the unique stipulation, to which Wight responded that he knows as much as the fans do:

Like A Dragon Gaiden Street Fight. Yeah, don’t ask me what that involves. I just know it sounds like there’ll be a lot of carnage and a lot of bodies flying everywhere, so just another day at the office,

When asked about his first match in over 2 years, Wight revealed that he is a mixture of excitement and nerves going into the 8 man match. Wight also stated that as he is already an established name in the wrestling world due to his previous work in WCW and WWE, the bigger priority is to let the younger talent shine:

“I am excited. To be honest with you, I’m nervous. I think that’s part of the draw or the magic of doing what we do is that anticipation, that adrenaline rush of performing in front of a crowd and wanting to put on a good show, an exciting show, and that’s a hard fix to get anywhere else.

You have to adjust your expectations on what you’re doing as things mature. Because when you’re younger, it’s kind of about you. They’re building you. Well, I’m built. So now it’s my chance to give back to other talent and help younger talent establish themselves and hopefully become household names at some point,”

While this is Paul Wight’s first televised match since All Out 2021, there were originally plans for The Giant to compete at All In back in August.

Paul Wight Discusses Retirement Date

Prioritising his behind-the-scenes role in AEW and looking to develop talent, Wight is aware that his final match is not too far away. When asked about his final years as an in-ring competitor, Paul Wight revealed when he plans to retire and what his final goals are before hanging up the boots for good.

Following the conclusion of the Street Fight, Chris Jericho has revealed that he suffered a strange injury during the AEW match.
