Former WCW head booker Kevin Sullivan has made predictions about the main events for WrestleMania 40, stating that he believes CM Punk will feature in one of the prestigious matches.
According to Sullivan, Seth Rollins vs. CM Punk and Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes will headline the two nights of the event. Sullivan stated on a recent episode of Tuesday with the Taskmaster that these matches would close out the respective nights at The Showcase of Immortals in Philadelphia.
However, Sullivan’s picks are based on the condition that The Rock won’t be returning to WWE for his rumoured match against Reigns. Sullivan believes that the story for Punk vs. Rollins has already begun with their backstage antics and believes it will be an exciting match.
I think you’re gonna end up seeing Cody and Roman as the main event, and I like the idea of ‘Freakin Rollins against Punk for Night 1, I think they’ve already started telling the story for [Punk versus Rollins] by holding them back, giving each other the finger, causing s**t backstage … I think that will be it.
He also emphasised the importance of the circumstances under which Punk left WWE in 2014, suggesting that Rollins will use that as an angle in the main event. Sullivan also mentioned that if Punk were placed in a different match, he might not generate as much heat. He compared it to when Cody Rhodes didn’t win at WrestleMania 38, stating that if Cody wins, the crowd reaction will be significant.
He left with some stink on him, Rollins is going to pick on that, and that may be the angle of the main event. But if Punk’s put in there with anybody else, I think he’d get some heat on himself. Even as great as he is, it’s like when Cody didn’t win at WrestleMania [38], people were really mad. But when he wins, the pop is going to be so much bigger.

According to a report CM Punk was considering making his WWE return at the 2023 Royal Rumble. However, WWE were reportedly not interested in bringing Punk back at that time.
