WWE Raw Sees Major Viewership Dropoff raw logo

This week on WWE Raw featured the returns of CM Punk, Randy Orton, plus a Tag Team Turmoil match and the Women’s Tag Team Titles on the line.

Raw took place at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville with Michael Cole and Wade Barrett on commentary. The first hour was commercial-free.

Randy Orton got a huge ovation leading to his Raw return. Orton talked about how great it felt to be back. Orton said he was focused on tearing apart The Bloodline and he said it with a lot of intensity. Rhea Ripley interrupted to try to suggest that Orton join The Judgment Day, but Orton shut that down. Dominik Mysterio & JD McDonagh attacked Orton from behind. It didn’t go that well since Orton dropped JD (wearing a neckbrace) with an RKO while Dominik left the ring. Orton challenged Dominik to match later in the show.

Match 1: There was a six-team Tag Team Turmoil Match won by The Creed Brothers.

* #DIY – Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa defeated Alpha Academy – Otis & Akira Tozawa
* #DIY – Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa vs. Indus Sher – Veer & Sanga
* The Creed Brothers – Julius & Brutus Creed defeated #DIY – Johnny Gargano & Tommaso Ciampa
* The Creed Brothers – Julius & Brutus Creed defeated The New Day – Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods
* The Creed Brothers – Julius & Brutus Creed defeated Imperium – Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci

The win by The Creed Brothers means they will challenge The Judgment Day for the WWE Tag Team Titles.

The Judgment Day was backstage letting Damian Priest know that they didn’t hold a grudge toward him for losing in the WarGames match.

Cody Rhodes did an in-ring promo saying “Welcome back” to CM Punk. Cody also declared that he would be the 2024 Royal Rumble match. Cody Rhodes also spoke about Randy Orton being a mentor to him. The lights went out, so a video from Shinsuke Nakamura aired warning Cody, which meant Nakamura was issuing warnings to Cody. The lights came back on and Nakamura sprayed red mist into Cody’s face.

Match #2: Bronson Reed vs. Ivar ended in a Double Countout. They were brawling on the floor as the referee reached a count past ten and that was it. Reed and Ivar kept brawling as they fought into the crowd. Ivar hit a somersault dive off an equipment case onto Reed. There were security guys and WWE Officials there to break it up.

A video aired showing some fan reactions to CM Punk’s WWE return at Survivor Series. A graphic said it was the most social moment in WWE history with over 71 million views and over 24 million views on Twitter/X as well.

R-Truth had a funny backstage segment with The Judgment Day by volunteering to team up with them at WarGames. The J-Day guys let him know it was on last Saturday. Truth kept on annoying them, so JD McDonagh said he’d handle Truth.

Match #3: Nia Jax defeated Zoey Stark by pinfall. Jax won with the Annihilator splash. The match was set up in a backstage segment earlier in the day.

The Miz went up to Intercontinental Champion GUNTHER asking for a rematch from their Survivor Series match. GUNTHER admitted that The Miz deserves to be in that ring, just not with GUNTHER.

Seth Rollins did an in-ring promo with the fans chanting “CM Punk” at him. Rollins said that he doesn’t want to spend one more second or ounce of energy on that hypocrite. Rollins moved on saying he’s ready to defend the World Heavyweight Title again. Drew McIntyre interrupted and wanted a title shot. Rollins said somebody else has the next title shot and it’s Jey Uso, which made Drew angry. Drew headbutted Rollins. Jey Uso made the save, which led to Seth & Jey superkicking Drew out of the ring.

After a break, Sami Zayn went up to Drew McIntyre backstage. Zayn said he also got screwed out of the WWE Title by The Bloodline in front of his friends & family (at Elimination Chamber) and nearly beat Seth Rollins for his title too. Zayn said that Drew was acting like a spoiled brat. Drew said that he needs to work his way up the ladder again so he’s going to ask for a match with Zayn.

Match #4: Chelsea Green & Piper Niven defeated Natalya & Tegan Nox to retain the Women’s Tag Team Titles. After Natalya & Nox suplexed Green into the barricade, Niven dove off the apron onto both opponents on the floor. Niven hit a running cross body block on Nox for the pinfall win.

Jey Uso spoke to Randy Orton backstage. Randy talked about how he has seen Jey change and how he’s been there for Cody as well as the others. Randy said that Jey is no longer in The Bloodline, so Jey doesn’t have to worry about Randy coming after him.

Match #5: Randy Orton defeated Dominik Mysterio by pinfall. Orton won clean with the RKO. JD McDonagh was at ringside and Orton beat him up too.

CM Punk delivered a promo in the ring. There were eight minutes left for him to speak. CM Punk said that it looks like hell froze over. Punk said that lately he’s been feeling like himself ever since Saturday, which was a career highlight. Punk said that he has come to two words and he’s a bit scared of how true they are: “I’m Home.”

CM Punk said that he came back to this familiar place because this has made him feel at home. Punk said he’s been gone for ten years and you people never forgot him. Punk said that the people watching at home and people in the building never stopped chanting his name.

Punk spoke about how the Wise Man told him to get everything he needs out of this place he had to leave and come back. Punk said that the Wise Man (likely a Paul Heyman reference) was right. Punk said that it feels like a family reunion. Punk said that there were a lot of hugs backstage and even some people kissing him too. There have been a lot of people asking how his wife AJ (Lee) is doing and Punk said that AJ is fabulous and sends her regards.

Punk said that everybody has welcomed him back with open arms…but then he said “almost everybody” without naming names. Punk said that they are afraid of the truth. Punk said that the competition here is the best in the world, but the “Best in the World” hasn’t been here for ten years. Punk said that they are afraid that the most dangerous, most controversial and feared man just walked through the door and they can’t do anything about it. Punk spoke about being the Best in the World and referenced what he said in that famous July 2011 promo about being the best in the world in this ring, on this microphone and even on commentary.

To wrap it up, CM Punk said that the best in the world is back standing in the ring, live in living color and his name is…the fans chanted “CM Punk” right on cue. Punk spoke into the camera saying he was back. Punk said into the camera he’s not here to make friends, he’s here to make money. That was it.
