Goldberg Borrowed Jackhammer By Accident From WCW Legend

Goldberg reveals where he got the inspiration for his two biggest moves.

Ask a wrestling fan to name a move by the Hall of Famer and odds are they will say either Spear or Jackhammer. The moves are so devastating when delivered by the former World Champion that he was able to put away Brock Lesnar in under 2 minutes at Survivor Series 2016 after delivering multiple finishers to The Beast.

Speaking with the Chicago Sports Podcast, Goldberg revealed that the inspiration for the Jackhammer came when he saw former WCW Cruiserweight Champion and technical master Dean Malenko perform his own version of it overseas:

The Jackhammer was used by Dean Malenko in Japan and Dean did it from the top rope, from the top turnbuckle. But Dean is a flyweight. Right. So I was the only big man that had ever done it. And I kind of took it from him. But I put my own twist on it, literally.

With regards to the Spear, the former World Champion needed the most devastating manoeuvre possible, so charged at opponent Manny Fernandez:

And the spear obviously just an accident. I did a dark match with Manny Fernandez. And they told me before you go out whatever you do, you know, make the finish a good finish. And I’m like, What’s my finish? I don’t have one. And they said, Well, just make it impactful.

So I get in the ring and I look at Manny before the bell rings and I go Do you trust me? And he goes, Yeah, and I said, Well, when it comes to finish, just tuck your chin put your head between your legs and kiss your ass goodbye. And he said okay. And he did it and I did [the spear] and I came to the back and everybody’s mouth was open, and they said do that every time. I am like Okay.

When Will Goldberg Retire?

Now no longer a member of the WWE roster, the Hall of Famer is a free agent and has yet to appear for another promotion. The former World Champion has also heavily hinted that he is considering a retirement tour in the near future to wrap up his legendary career. It has been rumoured that multiple big names are being considered for Goldberg’s final matches.

With AEW always seemingly an option, Tony Khan has confirmed that he has talked with Goldberg in the past.
