Despite getting positive reviews ahead of its premiere, The Iron Claw and its cast were passed over when it comes to Golden Globe nominations.
The Von Erichs are one of the most famous families in wrestling history, but their story is fraught with tragedy. Following the sudden passing of David Von Erich at the young age of 25, his brothers Mike, Kerry, and Chris all ended up taking their own lives. Family patriarch and World Class Championship Wrestling promoter Fritz Von Erich passed away from brain and lung cancer at the age of 68. Of the brothers, only Kevin survives.
The Iron Claw stars Zac Efron as Kevin Von Erich. Jeremy Allen White, who recently found great success as part of FX’s The Bear, plays the role of Kerry Von Erich. The film also features Holt McCallany as Fritz Von Erich, Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich, and Aaron Dean Eisenberg as The Nature Boy Ric Flair. AEW World Champion MJF is also in the movie, playing Lance Von Erich.
The film is set to premiere in theaters on December 22nd and is already receiving praise from critics. However, USA Today reports that the film and its actors received zero nominations at the upcoming Golden Globe awards, writing about Zac Efron:
“The former teen heartthrob steps into the ring in “The Iron Claw,” which tells the tragic real-life story of the Von Erich family wrestling dynasty. But the well-received movie was down for the count when it was overlooked in all Globes categories, including best actor.”
How Does Kevin Von Erich Feel About The Iron Claw?
While he wasn’t directly involved in the film, Kevin Von Erich was present at the premiere of The Iron Claw, and he had high praise for the movie as well as Zac Efron’s portrayal of him. However, according to Triple H, WWE Hall of Famer Michael Hayes was upset to be portrayed in the film without giving permission.
