Tony Khan’s Recent Social Media Activity Sparks Concern From Dave Meltzer

AEW President Tony Khan

Tony Khan has taken massive shots across enemy lines on social media and it’s caused Dave Meltzer a bit of concern.

Tony Khan has had a busy early week as not only was it his birthday on October 11, but his AEW Dynamite product went head-to-head with NXT. WWE clearly stacked the deck for their Tuesday night showdown with AEW as all sorts of heavy-hitters like Cody Rhodes, John Cena and The Undertaker appeared on the program. Khan,in turn, had Adam Copeland make his in-ring AEW debut against Luchasaurus and Orange Cassidy re-gained his International Championship against Rey Fenix.

However, the real heat may have been on social media as the AEW President mocked Triple H, Shawn Michaels and Vince McMahon online in build for Tuesday night. When the dust settled, Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer talked about it on his Observer Radio Show, noting that Khan’s comments reminded him of WCW unraveling during the height of the Monday Night Wars.

“You know what it felt like? And it was a scary thing, because (of) the memories of what happened next – it reminded me of when Eric Bischoff… WCW was still doing really good at this point, but when they started losing, you could see that everybody was just losing it on the WCW side.

“They were ahead for a year-and-a-half and they probably thought they were gonna be ahead forever, and forever didn’t last. And Steve Austin got hot, and things changed.

“And when #WWE started winning on Monday night, which was hardly the end of the world because WCW was still drawing very well and their TV ratings were still very good, but they were losing most weeks – not even every week, but most weeks. And they just unraveled, and the TV just got really sh*tty.”

Dave Meltzer Does Think Tony Khan Did Do AEW Dynamite Justice

Meltzer did bring up the notorious angle of Eric Bischoff challenging Vince McMahon to a fight as an example of WCW losing their footing against WWE, but the positive aspect for Meltzer is that he thinks the AEW product is still engaging.

“Now the one thing I’ll say is, the #AEW television tonight was hardly bad – it was very, very good. So we haven’t seen that yet, But that was a sign, when things like that happen, and WCW just went to hell after that. And hopefully that does not happen with AEW.”
