Former WWE Star Addresses Claims That The Rock Was Selfish

The Rock holding WWE Championship

Jonathan Coachman has explained why The Rock had to be selfish during his full-time WWE career.

The Rock had a meteoric rise to the top of WWE, capturing the promotion’s top championship at the 1998 Survivor Series, less than two years after his debut. His popularity only continued to rise during the Attitude Era, and by the time he permanently swapped the ring for Hollywood in 2003, he was one of the most loved stars the company had ever seen.

Despite this, there have been people in the past who have accused the People’s Champion of being selfish during his time in the ring. According to Jonathan Coachman, though, that was just part of what he needed to do to reach the top.

During a recent appearance on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the former commentator explained that the star had to fight to get their spots.

“I hate when people say ‘Oh, The Rock was selfish back then.’ Everybody had to be selfish back then. People don’t understand; they look at what it is now.”

“They had to be because everybody fought to get in that spot. If more … wrestlers fought today to get in that spot, I think we’d have better storylines. We’d have more competition. We’d have better promos. … I really believe that.”

Will The Rock Run For US President?

Today, Dwayne Johnson is long-past fighting for his spot in pro wrestling, and has successfully conquered Hollywood as one of the highest-paid actors in the world. Could the star be looking for a new challenge in politics?

In a recent interview, The Rock revealed he has been approached by multiple parties asking if he could run for the presidency, however, that role isn’t in his sights, at least not right now.
