The Rock's Production Company Working On New WCW Docuseries

The Rock will once again turn to wrestling as the focus for his upcoming project.

As reported by Deadline, Seven Bucks Productions, which is owned by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, will partner with Vice to produce “a docuseries investigating the mysterious demise of World Championship Wrestling (WCW), once the biggest wrestling company in America.”

Wrestling fans are familiar with Vice’s work on the Dark Side of the Ring docuseries, a deep dive into some of the most tragic and controversial moments in the history of wrestling. In regards to WCW, season 4 of Dark Side of the Ring focused on the story behind the infamous Bash at the Beach 2000 pay-per-view.

Fans are very familiar with the final days of WCW, which closed its doors for good in March 2001. The promotion was purchased by rival WWE for a total of $4.3 million, an initial $2.5 million to cover the purchase of the brand, rights and other assets aside from talent and video library, with a further $1.7 million required to pay AOL Time Warner for the negotiations.

Some are surprised by the subject of the upcoming docuseries as the rise and fall of World Championship Wrestling has been told ad nauseam by various wrestlers who were a part of the promotion in 2001 and even by WWE themselves in the Network Series The Monday Night War.

The upcoming docuseries joins further instalments to the Fast and Furious and Jumanji franchises as upcoming projects for Seven Bucks Productions. No release date for the WCW docuseries has been announced at the time of writing.

Did The Rock Ever Wrestle In WCW?

The Great One remained loyal to Vince McMahon throughout his wrestling career, never wrestling for Ted Turner’s organisation before or after the 1996 debut at Survivor Series. However, the Hollywood star has previously held WCW gold. Following the buy-out in 2001, Rock would hold the World Heavyweight Championship twice in his career. The first reign took place at SummerSlam when The Great One defeated Booker T in the main event.

Following a loss and regaining of the title to Chris Jericho, Rock would lose the title to Jericho a second time at Vengeance, which would lead to Jericho going on to defeat Steve Austin later in the night to become the first-ever Undisputed Champion.

In a recent interview, The Rock revealed how he nearly quit WWE to pursue a career in MMA.
