WWE Champion Knows They Won’t Main Event WrestleMania 40: “Not Going To Happen”

WWE WrestleMania 40 logo reveal

Gunther is not expecting to go on last at WrestleMania Saturday.

Ever since The Show of Shows became a two-night event, the main event of night one has never been a certainty. With Roman Reigns looking set to main event WrestleMania for the 4th straight year on Sunday, multiple options are available for Saturday.

Some fans believe that a Women’s Championship should get the coveted spot with the winner of the Royal Rumble receiving the accolade. Others believe that the best storyline should main event the show, as was seen at WrestleMania 39 when Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn defeated The Usos. A third option would be which match has the highest potential to be the match of the night, which very likely could be whoever faces The Ring General for the Intercontinental Championship.

Speaking with Wrestling News.co, the Intercontinental Champion was asked if the title could main event night 1. For those hoping for a marquee match for the leader of Imperium, the champion simply denied it being a possibility:

“That’s not gonna happen,”

Unlike WrestleMania 39, a new World Championship has been introduced into WWE, which is currently held by Seth Rollins. When asked about the option of Rollins and Reigns main eventing respective nights, the Intercontinental Champion responded “It should be.”

Gunther Looks To Aim Higher In WWE

During the interview, The Ring General is aware that the Intercontinental Championship is now secondary to the World Heavyweight Championship on Raw. Addressing the rankings, the IC Champion believes that he has done everything there is to do with the IC Title and is aiming for a more prestigious prize:

“But I think there’s a ranking system and everything for a reason. I think it’s quite obvious that I outgrew the Intercontinental Championship already, I am ready to make that next step.”

Addressing a WWE Hall of Famer who was also Intercontinental Champion, Gunther did not hold back on the wrestler’s lack of in-ring abilities.

In the same interview, Gunther revealed his admiration for a WWE star who is now in AEW.
