Calls For The UK To Host WrestleMania Reach British Parliament

WWE comes to the United Kingdom

John Cena’s call for London to host WrestleMania has been heard by the UK Parliament.

Cena made a surprise appearance at Money In The Bank when it was held in the city on July 1st. After praising the fans, he said he was there with a message for the “decision-makers,” that he was on a mission to bring the Showcase Of The Immortals to England’s capital.

While the message may have been aimed at the powers that be in WWE, it has also caught the attention of the UK’s decision-makers in Parliament.

Speaking to BBC Newsbeat, Alex Davies-Jones, who is the Member of Parliament for Pontypridd in Wales and the co-chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Wrestling, said it was “utterly incredible” to hear Cena advocate for WrestleMania in the UK, adding that it would be good for the economy of the country.

Davies-Jones went on to say she has been talking to her colleagues in the APPG to see how they could make the event happen.

“I would love for it to happen. The APPG have already been talking about how we can help to make that happen in whatever way we can in terms of facilitating some conversations.

“Whatever we can do to make the UK attractive to host wrestling on the world stage we are more than happy to help facilitate. We would use our contact and negotiating skills to try and reach out to WWE, making conversations happen to try and promote the UK as a premier destination for world-class wrestling.”

Triple H comments on hosting WrestleMania in the UK

At the press conference following Money In The Bank, Triple H was asked about the possibility and joked that Cena had put him in an “unenviable position” with his speech.

While he has good memories of performing in the UK, the Chief Content Officer said it was “tough” to make the Grandaddy Of Them All happen there.

“As far as WrestleMania goes, it’s tough! I wish it was that easy, I wish it was as easy as saying, “Man, it’s phenomenal there, let’s go.” We’d be going to a lot of places.”

He did give some hope to UK fans, explaining how the company has been expanding its overseas reach in recent months.

“But I can say this – if you look at this year, 2023 alone, four of the last five premium live events that we have done have been international destinations.”

He finished by saying that “the intent is there” and gave the old wrestling adage, “never say never.”

“Bodes well for international. We are a global company. We intend to be a global company, we intend to be global. So, never say never for any of it. The intent is there.

“It’s a lot more difficult than it appears, but the intent is there. If there’s a way to get a lot of these international events done, we’re hellbent on doing them.”
