Fans have hit out at Chris Jericho over a controversial comment he made several years ago on his podcast.
One of the darkest periods in wrestling history took place in June 2007, when it was revealed that Chris Benoit had murdered his wife, Nancy, and son, Daniel, before taking his own life.
In the years since, many of Benoit’s family and friends have struggled to make sense of the tragedy. This includes Chris Jericho, who in 2016 interviewed Nancy Benoit’s sister, Sandra Toffolini, for Talk Is Jericho.
During the conversation, Jericho made a controversial comment in an attempt to understand what happened. This has now resurfaced online.
“But the thing for me, Sandy, is like, listen, anybody that’s ever been in a relationship or married, like, you can understand if, in a moment of rage, you can’t agree with it, but you could understand how, someone could, you know, kill their wife.”
Jericho followed up by saying he couldn’t understand what happened to Daniel in any way.

The comments have created a backlash on social media, with one fan calling him a “despicable p***k”, and another calling it a “terrible” thing to say. Meanwhile, others accused Jericho of being a “strange” person for his words.

In 2020, Jericho took part in a two-part episode on Benoit for Dark Side Of The Ring. He has since told Digital Spy it was the definitive account of the tragedy as it included all of the people needed to address the different aspects of what happened.
The star also said, “There’s no reason for any of us to ever really talk about it again.”
