On the May 29th episode of WWE Raw, Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler became the Women’s Tag Team Champions for the first time.
While this was the third time that Baszler had held the gold, the win marked a first for the Baddest Woman on the Planet.
The match was made after Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez were forced to vacate their titles after Morgan suffered a shoulder injury. This set up a Fatal-Four-Way match featuring Ronda Rousey & Shayna Baszler, Chelsea Green & Sonya Deville, Damage CTRL, and Raquel Rodriguez with her new partner Shotzi.
In the end, it was Baszler and Rousey who scored the win, with the latter forcing Shotzi to submit.
Speaking after the win with the New York Post, Rousey blasted the division she had just conquered. She said that the lack of competition was a “real problem” describing the talent pool as “dismally shallow.”
Her criticism also extended to WWE management, claiming that their “biggest challenge” is to get the “company to actually care” about the division.
“Well, the lack of competition is really the problem,” Rousey said. “I mean, we want to be the most active champions out there. I want to be able to defend this title every week and even twice a week on both ‘SmackDown’ and ‘Raw’.
But with how dismally shallow the women’s division is right now, there’s not enough women around here to keep us busy for a month. And so that’s the biggest challenge that we have is to get this company to actually care and invest into this tag division.”
Referring to the time between her leaving WWE in 2019 and coming back in January 2022 the former UFC said that the “entire women’s division just got stripped clean.” To hammer home her withering assessment of her rivals, Rousey said that she and Baszler are trying to make “chicken salad out of chicken sh*t.”
“And now we’re the women that are the women that are left trying to piece together, you know, stories and a division, a tag division with around 10 women or even less on each roster. I mean, we’re trying the best that we can to make chicken s–t into chicken salad, and we made some amazing chicken salad (Monday night).”
Ronda Rousey Forced Creative Changes To Win Tag Team Gold
In the lead-up to WrestleMania 39, it was reported that Ronda Rousey asked to drop the SmackDown Women’s Tag Team Title so that she could team with Shayna Baszler to win the Tag Team Titles.
This saw Charlotte Flair win the SmackDown Women’s Title before going on to face Rousey’s originally scheduled opponent Rhea Ripley at WrestleMania. Rousey and Baszler were planned to win the Tag Team Titles at the spectacular but the match was changed, reportedly, at least in part due to Rousey being injured.
