Ronda Rousey: 2022 Biography, Net Worth, Family, Income
Ronda Rousey was born in Riverside, California, on February 1, 1987, and she is an Olympic Bronze Medalist, UFC Hall of Famer and WWE Superstar.
Her fighting journey began in 1998 when she began training in judo under the tutelage of her mother, AnnMaria “Animal” De Mars. Her mother, a 6th Degree BlackBelt judoka and the first-ever American to win a gold medal at the World Judo Championships. During her time in combat sports, De Mars was known for a certain submission technique, which she would pass on to her daughter. She would surprise Rousey every morning when sleeping in bed, leaping on top of her and locking in an armbar making sure her daughter was always prepared for combat.
Rousey was the face of American judo in the mid-2000s becoming the youngest judoka to compete at the Olympic games at age 17. At the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing she became the first American to win an Olympic medal in women’s Judo since it was recognised as an Olympic sport in 1992. After the Olympic triumph, Rousey entered the world of MMA. She adopted a more physical style of judo and combined it with Jiu-Jitsu at the legendary Gracie Academy she quickly made a name for herself in 2010 by winning her amateur debut at King of the Cage: Turning Point in just 23 seconds with her signature armbar.
That same year Rousey participated in the inaugural Tuff-N-Uff 145-pound women’s tournament, where she submitted her quarterfinal opponent in 56 seconds. Rousey then made MMA headlines when she called out the Strikeforce Women’s Middleweight Champion Cris Cyborg. The following year Rousey made her Strikeforce debut, winning her first two fights with first-round submissions before defeating Miesha Tate for the Women’s Bantamweight Championship in 2012. Rousey’s increasing popularity and success saw her become the first-ever female fighter to join UFC and the inaugural Women’s Bantamweight Champion.
She would go on to gain legendary status inside the octagon with her explosive performances and swift destruction of her opponents. This led to mainstream attention making her one of the most recognisable female performers on the planet. Apart from dominating in UFC she scored movie roles, became the first woman featured on the cover of Australian Men’s Fitness, the first female athlete to guest host ESPN’s SportsCenter.
However, her record-setting run in the UFC came to an end at the hands of Holly Holm who shockingly defeated for the championship in 2015. Her comeback fight the following year against Amanda Nunez resulted in another defeat, which led to her retirement from MMA.
Throughout her UFC career, Ronda Rousey was strongly linked to professional wrestling due to the Rowdy nickname bestowed upon her by WWE legend Roddy Piper. While the star along with Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir they called themselves The Four Horsewomen. In 2015, at WrestleMania 31 alongside Dwayne Johnson, she had an in-ring confrontation with Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Two years later she appeared at the Mae Young Classic in support of her friend Shayna Baszler. Then in 2018, she made a surprise appearance at the end of the first-ever women’s Royal Rumble match. After the event, it was announced that Ronda Rousey had signed a full-time contract with WWE.
Upon signing with WWE, Rousey made her debut at WrestleMania 34 teaming with Kurt Angle to take on Triple H and Stephanie McMahon. Rousey was immediately placed in a prominent position in the promotion and challenged Nia Jax for the Raw Women’s Championship in her second PPV match. Alexa Bliss cost Rousey the match and title by cashing in her Money in the Bank contract setting up a feud between the two.
Ronda Rousey defeated Bliss for the championship and successfully defended it against Nikki Bella, Mickie James, Natalya and Sasha Banks before entering an intense programme with Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair. The feud culminated in the three facing off in the first-ever women’s main event match in WrestleMania history.
After taking some time away from the ring to start a family, Ronda Rousey made a shock appearance at 2022’s Royal Rumble outlasting twenty-nine other women to emerge victorious in her first WWE outing in nearly three years. The victory led to her challenging SmackDown Women’s Champion Charlotte Flair as her opponent at WrestleMania 38. Rousey failed to capture the title but was successful in her second chance at WrestleMania Backlash in an “I Quit” match. Rousey surprisingly lost the title to Liv Morgan in a match which saw her turn heel. After serving a suspension for attacking WWE officials she returned to defeat Morgan at Extreme Rules.
