Mercedes Mone Was Rumoured For Huge AEW Match Prior To Injury

Mercedes Mone

A new report has shed some light on the match Mercedes Mone would have had at Forbidden Door.

Mone was last in action at NJPW Resurgence where she was part of a tournament to determine the first STRONG Women’s Champion. The CEO defeated Stephanie Vaquer in the first round and went on to meet AEW star Willow Nightingale in the final.

Disaster struck during the match when the pair climbed the turnbuckle only for Mone to lose her balance and fall to the floor. Although she was able to finish the match, it was later revealed that she had broken her ankle and would be on the injured list for some time.

The injury also led to the outcome of the match being changed on the fly, with Nightingale unexpectedly emerging as the victor and first Women’s Champion for New Japan’s US brand.

Now, it has been reported that plans for the star had been made for Forbidden Door.

Mercedes Mone’s rumoured Forbidden Door match revealed

According to Fightful Select, AEW had made inquiries about getting Mone on the cross-promotional show, with a New Japan source saying the idea went as far back as January.

Fightful went on to note that there had been rumours that the former IWGP Women’s Champion would be facing Saraya, although they have confirmed the Outcasts member hadn’t been approached about it.

If the match were to happen, it would be the first time the two met in the ring since both were in WWE. The last time they clashed in singles action was on Raw in December 2017. On that occasion, Saraya- then known as Paige – came out on top after a distraction from her Absolution teammates, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville.
