“Sheamus Was A Great Opponent, He Doesn’t Stop” – Gunther

Sheamus punches Gunther

Gunther is a big fan of Sheamus.

For much of the last year, Sheamus has been on a mission to win the Intercontinental Title. It’s the only major championship he hasn’t held, and he’s desperate to make sure his career doesn’t end that way.

This has repeatedly put him up against Gunther, and the result has been a series of terrifically hard-hitting matches beloved by fans. The most notable of these came at WWE Clash At The Castle where the pair went to war for the best part of 20 minutes in what was a match of the year candidate.

During a new interview with Fightful, Gunther reflected on the match and detailed his respect for Sheamus.

“The thing is, I guess to some degree, but everything happens so fast that it’s very hard to actually sit back sometimes and enjoy or reflect on what happened and stuff like that. Overall, it was great. I think Clash at the Castle was good for me because it was the first big pay-per-view match for me, or PLE as we say now.

I could just showcase myself, showcase to the audience what I do. I think the style of match I put on is nothing they have really seen on that scale before. I think that’s why it stood out and why it was special, and Sheamus was a great opponent. He doesn’t stop, so you really gotta put a lot of effort into keeping the guy down.”

Sheamus Feels He Was Wasted After Gunther Clash

While Gunther has gone from strength to strength since that memorable clash in Wales and stands on the edge of becoming the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time, Sheamus has been much more frustrated.

In a recent interview, Sheamus said WWE had wasted his momentum after the Gunther match, describing his role in the WarGames match at Survivor Series as “sh*t.”
