The Butcher Reflects on Sting Giving Him “Imposter Syndrome”

Sting and The Butcher

After sharing the ring with “The Icon” Sting earlier this year, The Butcher has reflected on the spot in their match which made him star-struck.

The match occurred on the 22nd of March, 2023, edition of AEW Dynamite. It was a trios match, where Sting, Darby Allin and Orange Cassidy faced off against The Butcher, The Blade and Kip Sabian.

In an eleven-minute bout, Sting, Darby, and Cassidy emerged victorious, but for The Butcher, the result isn’t what stands out; it was the time he spent in the ring with “The Icon.”

Speaking on the NotSam Wrestling YouTube Channel, Butcher commented on the match.

“In that match, I called a spot where I was mocking him…I mocked the Stinger Splash and stuff like that.”

“And I was on the other side of the ring, looking at him… You see the arena, and it’s filled with people, and they’re reacting, and you’re like, ‘What am I doing? What am I doing right now? Where am I? Am I in the world? I’m about to hit Sting with the Stinger Splash.'”

“I never put myself ever there, ever. And still, sometimes I have that imposter syndrome where I was just like. ‘This is so weird. I feel like I’m floating above myself,’ looking at the situation and thinking I’m watching Nitro.”

The match currently holds a 6.45/10 rating on Cagematch.net, making it the third-best bout on the show.

Is Sting Retiring?

Given that Sting is now 64 years old, it’s understandable that fans might be preparing themselves for his impending retirement.

However, in a recent interview, Sting confirmed that he does not yet have a date in mind for his curtain call, but it is not far away.

“I have not decided on a date for sure. A lot of people have actually wondered if I was gonna retire in Wembley. That would be kinda cool, but I don’t see that happening. I think I’m gonna continue on. Tony’s kinda been in my ear a little bit here and there, saying, ‘Steve, you can stay as long as you want!’ So I’m not sure how long that’ll be. But like I said a few months ago, ‘Showtime is just about over with,’ and it truly is.”
