Top ROH Star Signs New AEW Contract Despite WWE Interest

Samoa Joe Brian Cage ROH AEW

Back in January, it was reported that ROH Six Man Tag Team Champion Brian Cage’s AEW contract was set to expire soon.

According to Fightful Select, the star’s contract was originally set to expire in 2022 before he signed a contract extension. All Elite Wrestling intended to add more time to Cage’s contract to account for time he took away from the ring while dealing with an injury. However, Cage pushed back against this as he was interested in the possibility of becoming a free agent. The report states that some of the time AEW wanted to add onto Cage’s contract was specifically because he signed with the company while he was injured after competing in IMPACT Wrestling years ago.

That report also noted that WWE was gauging interest in Cage, and that he’s been heavily praised for his work since returning to television in mid-2022.

Cage became the ROH World Six-Man Tag Team Champion alongside the Gates of Agony when the trio defeated Dalton Castle and The Boys at Final Battle back in December, and at Supercard of Honor, the trio successfully defended against AR Fox, Blake Christian, and Metalik.

Cage reportedly became a free agent when his contract expired at the end of March, ending at midnight immediately following ROH Supercard of Honor, making him a free agent despite remaining a champion in the promotion.

Brian Cage Re-Signed With AEW

Now, according to another update from Fightful Select, Cage has officially put pen to paper and re-signed with AEW despite WWE being interested in him. The report notes that he signed a long-term, multi-year deal sometime this week.

Also noted in the Fightful report is the fact that numerous high-up names in All Elite Wrestling were pushing for Cage to re-sign, while top talent in WWE were also angling to get him to sign with the rival sports entertainment giant. Despite WWE’s interest in him, Cage reportedly liked the offer from his current employer more, and worked with an agent throughout the entire process to help him make the best decision.

Sources told Fightful that All Elite Wrestling worked hard in the past few weeks to get the deal done, and that while the contract wasn’t officially signed yet, the two sides had agreed in principle before Cage joined forces with Swerve Strickland on Rampage.
