“Where’s The Benefit?”: Eric Bischoff Questions Contracted Talent Performing At Indie Shows

Eric Bischoff finds it bizarre that talent employed at major promotions are able to go and work at minor shows.

Outside of WWE, talent exchanges between the major promotions are seen quite frequently, with AEW, New Japan and IMPACT stars all making appearances on different brands. However, various talents in each of these promotions are allowed to work for smaller promotions such as GCW or local independent promotions to generate some buzz.

While this is a benefit for the smaller promotions who will get some extra revenue for their shows and fans will get to see top stars perform in their local town, does the larger promotion benefit in any way? If anything, it can be argued that working with more inexperienced talent can be a risk as there is a higher chance of injury.

Speaking on Strictly Business, Bischoff stated that there are positives to lending talent, but if he were running a promotion he wouldn’t do it as it is just too risky:

I wouldn’t do it. Where’s the benefit? Other than to the talent and to the indie promoter? Where’s the benefit? Where’s the risk? I guess you could probably if you dig deep enough and hard enough and you wanted to justify your position badly you could come up with a benefit, maybe because you’re supporting the indie scene and some, you know, building some loyalty and following within the independent audience. And that’s not a bad argument. It’s just the value of that argument is minimal, in my opinion.

What’s the risk? Well, the risk is somebody gets hurt on the indies, and takes them off your roster. I think that’s probably happened in the past. I just don’t see a scenario where the benefits outweigh the risks.
