Sycho Sid Reveals The Culprit Behind His Infamously Horrific Botch

Former WWE and WCW World Champion Sycho Sid recently opened up about the infamous botched spot that led to his devastating leg injury.

In an exclusive interview with Inside The Ropes, Sycho Sid revealed the shocking truth behind the incident that occurred during the January 2001 WCW PPV Sin. During the four-corners match for the WCW Title, Sid faced off against Scott Steiner, Jeff Jarrett, and Road Warrior Animal. It was during this match that Sid attempted a high-risk move suggested by John Laurinaitis. The move involved delivering a knee to Steiner’s head from the second rope.

Johnny Laurinaitis, they give him a one-day position to be like the book or the guy who came up with ideas. So he thought was Scott Steiner, if you watched him if he took a high boot in the corner, he took it really well. And he does it where his face into your foot really hard. So John says ‘We’re going to do something really crazy, we’re gonna get you to jump off the second rope and give Scott a high knee.’

However, Sid expressed his discomfort with the move and repeatedly requested a change throughout the day. Despite his concerns, Laurinaitis insisted on sticking to the original plan, claiming it was already written into the match’s script.

And I told him, I didn’t feel comfortable doing that. When he tells me, ‘We’ve already got it written down, it’s already in the back, we can’t get out of it.’ So two or three other times, I came to him through the day and I said ‘I just don’t feel comfortable with that.’ And so they just wouldn’t bend.

What Happened When Sycho Sid Broke His Leg?

When the crucial moment arrived, things quickly went awry. Steiner failed to move towards Sycho Sid as planned, leaving him in an awkward position mid-air. Sid had no choice but to land on his left leg, resulting in the horrific fracture of both his tibia and fibula.

And so what happened when I jumped, if you notice, Scott stopped coming in. When he stopped, I’m not gonna hang up there for very long. So I had to make a decision. I’m gonna land on my left leg, and I’m going to give him a knee to the head. And what happened and what I felt like, I’ve never watched the video, I think I came down at an angle. And when I came in at that angle, it was just enough to snap that part of the leg.

The aftermath of the incident saw Sycho Sid endure a lengthy rehabilitation process, forever altering his career trajectory. Eric Bischoff spoke about Sid’s leg break and why he decided against showing it on air.
