Gunther Explains Why He Despised WWE Early In His Career

Gunther competing on the WWE main roster is still an anomaly to some fans.

Those who have followed The Ring General in his Walter days would see the hard-hitting wrestler chop his way through the European independent scene. Never seemingly interested in competing in America, the leader of Imperium finally made his long-awaited debut as part of the NXT UK brand.

Known for his physical style and no-nonsense persona, the former United Kingdom Champion was very much the opposite of what WWE was presenting, with many fans who grew sick of Raw and SmackDown seeking out his matches to get their fix. Ironically, many who were fans of the hard-hitting wrestler actually wanted him to stay away from the sports entertainment titan for fear of what could happen.

As it turns out, disgruntled fans were not the only ones who had enough of the world’s largest wrestling company. Speaking with Wrestling News.co, the Intercontinental Champion explained that when he started out as a professional wrestler he found no enjoyment in WWE and found the presentation to not be to his taste:

“When I grew up, as a wrestler not when I was a kid, but when I was wrestling and diving in deep and trying to get better and stuff. I don’t know; I kind of despised WWE at that point because I didn’t like watching it. I was focused on I want to be a wrestler, and I want to be…yeah. I want to focus on that athleticism, and everything around it was too much for my personal taste in that time,”

Gunther Credits Wrestling Veteran For Their Longevity

The Intercontinental Champion was also asked to give his opinions on other notable names who have also held the title over the years. While Hall of Famers Bret Hart and The Ultimate Warrior did not receive positive comments from The Ring General, Gunther did praise a former Intercontinental Champion and Hall of Famer who is now in AEW for their longevity and what they have accomplished in more than 3 decades of wrestling.

Still reigning string as the Intercontinental Champion, Gunther revealed that if a unique offer were to present itself in WWE, he would never take it.
