AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash Night 1 Results

Keep up with all of tonight’s AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash night 1 results as the show’s 67th episode emanates from Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, Florida to present the first of two New Year’s Smash Dynamite specials!

The results from this week’s show were as follows:

  • The Young Bucks and SCU defeated The Hybrid2 and The Acclaimed via Pinfall
  • Wardlow defeated Jake Hager via Pinfall
  • Cody defeated Matt Sydal via Pinfall
  • Hikaru Shida (c) defeated Abadon via Pinfall to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship
  • Kenny Omega (c) defeated Rey Fenix via Pinfall to retain the AEW World Championship

The Young Bucks and SCU defeat The Hybrid2 and The Acclaimed via Pinfall

  • The match breaks down quick, with Nick Jackson taking down both of Hybrid2, but the heels eventually take control and focus on Christoher Daniels. The team hit 4 consecutive moves before Angelico locks in a Rings Of Saturn-esque submission, which Daneils breaks up with rope break.
  • Daniels creates a window of opportunity by hitting a Blue Thunder Bomb on Bowens before tagging in Kazarian. Kazarian takes down the entire opposing team before hitting a german suplex for a near-fall. Evans retaliates with a standing corkscrew moonsault.
  • Matt Jackson tags in and spears all of the opposing team before hitting Risky Business with Nick for a 2-count. The faces hit a powerbomb into a double enziguri into the corner before Kazarian hits a springboard DDT for a near-fall.
  • Kazarian and Nick hit the BTE Trigger but Jack Evans makes the save. Evans tries for a roll-up but Daniels breaks it up before hitting the Best Meltzer Driver Ever with Matt for the pinfall win.
  • After the match, SCU remind us that next time they lose they will disband. SCU say they have Young Bucks’ back when they need them except when they challenge for the tag titles and that they want to win them from the best tag team in the world.

Analysis: Good opener that really showed off SCU’s renewed passion as of late. Ever since they cut that promo on Dark that their next loss will cause them to disband as a team, there’s been a fire under both Kazarian and Daniels that we haven’t seen from either in some time. I imagine this leads to them having one last hoorah against the Bucks but I hope they wait till either Beach Break or even Revolution for that. SCU’s break-up feels big enough for either.

Jon Moxley Returns, Promises He Will “Get Even And Then Some” With Kenny Omega

  • Moxley says complaining about the way he lost the title isn’t worth his time but he says he won’t back down an inch to Omega. He says it isn’t his right to interfere in Fenix’s destiny.
  • Moxley states to Omega that he will “get even and then some” and promises that he will beg for mercy when he realises he crossed the wrong guy.

Analysis: Really intense, if short, returning promo from Moxley here. As stong a champion Moxley was, I’ve always felt like he was better climbing the mountain than standing at the top. Plus, Moxley with a vengeful streak is something we haven’t quite seen in AEW since the Jericho feud where he won the title, so I’m happy to see that side of him return. Here’s hoping he’s a regular presence on Dynamite over the next few weeks!

Chuck Taylor Lays Challenge Down To Miro, Wardlow defeats Jake Hager via Pinfall

  • Before the match, Dasha Fuentes interviews Chuck Taylor and Orange Cassidy. Chuck says Trent will be out 4-5 months before Miro, Sabian & Ford interrupt. Miro says Chuck can’t hide behind Cassidy all the time and offers Chuck a spot as his young boy.
  • Chuck lays down a challenge to Miro next week and Miro adds the stipulation that if Chuck loses, he will be Miro’s Young Boy till after the wedding.
  • The two men get into various tie-ups and neither come out on top as the Inner Circle watch on from the ramp. The two eventually throw each other to the outside before knocking each other down with dual lariats.
  • Back in the ring, Wardlow dominates over Hager using both powerful suplexes and stunning athletic dodges. Wardlow sets Hager up for the F-10 but Hager escapes before hitting several crossbodies into the corner.
  • Hager hits the double leg takedown and tries for the Hager Bomb but Wardlow gets the knees up. Hager tries for the ankle lock but Wardlow kicks him off before hitting two release suplexes for a near-fall.
  • Wardlow hits the Senton Atomico but Hager kicks out and locks in the triangle choke. Wardlow uses rope break to escape but Hager gets him up onto the second rope before locking in the triangle again.
  • Wardlow escapes by knocking Hager off onto the top rope before hitting the F-10 for the win.
  • Later in the show, MJF confronts Hager backstage and reminds Hager he’s still undefeated in the octagon. Hager says he’s cool and gives MJF a fist bump.

Analysis: I’m not sure I’m a massive fan of Chuck being Miro’s young boy as I would have preferred if both the teams had a slight cooldown before feuding again from Beach Break onwards. Hager vs Wardlow was fine though Wardlow looked FAR better than his opponent. Hager was a little sloppy and just felt a lot less confident in the ring than Wardlow though Wardlow did dominate for the majority of it. I’m still yet to be impressed by Hager, though it is early days still as he hasn’t had a lot of chances in-ring in AEW up to this point.

Private Party Sign New Contracts, Darby Allin and Brian Cage Weigh-In For Their TNT Title Showdown

  • Backstage, Private Party freak out over meeting Snoop Dogg before Matt Hardy interrupts. He presents them with new contracts courtesy of him and says if they want to become kings like Snoop, they need to sign them.
  • They do so and Matt makes a gag about them still being allowed to use third-party platforms like Twitch and Camero, which seems to surprise Private Party.
  • Schiavone prompts Cage to weigh-in first which Taz begins to complain about but Cage eventually concedes. Both men weigh-in and Cage has a 100-pound advantage on Darby.
  • Darby takes the mic from Tony and says this has been over 20 years in the making because he’s been dealing “with this shit” for years.
  • Team Taz look to beat up Darby and tells Schiavone to get out of the ring. but Sting makes the save as Tazz promises there’ll be a new TNT Champion next week.

Analysis: The Private Party backstage thing was a fun harmless way of working Snoop into an extra segment and getting a cheap dig in at WWE, but nothing much more. In regards to the weigh-in, I like how they actually detailed Cage’s weight advantage rather than him just being a bigger guy – mixes things up a little bit. What I don’t like, however, is we got the same Sting appearance segment we’ve gotten the last four weeks in a row. Look, I like Sting’s big dramatic entrance as much as the next guy but after four straight weeks of him coming out to scare off Team Taz, it wears thin. I really need to see more from The Stinger now as the rose-tinted glasses are very quickly fading.

Marko Stunt Reveals He’ll Face FTR Next Week, Cody defeats Matt Sydal via Pinfall, SNOOP DOGG HITS A DOGG SPLASH

  • We see -1’s promo against Marko Stunt from last night’s dark before Stunt is interviewed. He says Lucha Express are on a quest for the he’ll take Luchasaurus’ spot next week and it’l be him & Jungle Boy vs FTR next week.
  • Cody comes out accompanied by Snoop Dogg and has a special version of his theme rapped by Snoop. Sydal starts off aggressive against Rhodes, hitting a crossbody on the outside and mostly maintaining control over the American Nightmare.
  • He hits a standing corkscrew senton for a near-fall before getting into a slugfest with Rhodes. Cody gets the better of it and tries for the moonsault but misses. Sydal hits a flying knee and tries for the Shooting Star Press, but Cody gets the knees up.
  • Rhodes hits a reverse DDT for a near-fall before going to the top again. He misses and Sydal counters into a tilt-a-whirl manoevour into a grounded cobra clutch. Cody escapes and hits the Beautiful Disaster kick for a 2-count.
  • Cody attempts Din’s Fire but Sydal counters with a kick to the head before hitting the Lightning Spiral for a very close pinning combination. Cody avoids the jumping knee strike and hits the Cross Rhodes before hitting a second to secure the win.
  • After the match, Serpentico & Luther attack Cody but he regains control before allowing Snoop to hit a frog splash on Serpentico and ‘pin’ him.

Analysis: Stunt taking Luchasauras’ place is an interesting choice. He could even pick up a shock win which could make FTR even more dangerous heading into their eventual showdown with Luchasaurus and Jungle Boy but either way, I think the feud continues on well after next week. Cody vs Sydal was a great match, especially for Sydal in what I believe is his best AEW showing yet. Cody did a great job of making it seem like he was only a misstep away of falling to his opponent and made Sydal look great in the process. The post-match bit was the BEST/WORST thing I’ve ever seen with Snoop Dogg hitting maybe the worst Splash I’ve ever seen in my life (which I am now dubbing the ‘Dogg Splash’ – It was fantastic.

Hiraku Shida defeats Abadon via Pinfall to retain the AEW Women’s World Championship

  • Abadon attacks Shida as she makes her entrance and hits Abandon with a kendo stick. Abadon gets straight back up, the two get in the ring and start brawling.
  • Shida takes Abandon out to the apron before attempting a running knee lift but Abadon stops her before biting her thigh. Abadon drags Shida under the ring and bites her neck before dragging Shida back in the ring.
  • Abadon dominates over the champion but Shida regains control with a springboard frog splash to the outside.
  • Shida brings the challenger back into the ring with a superplex but Abadon just sits up and laughs. Shida hits the Tamashii to pick up the win.

Analysis: A perfectly fine match which I’m afraid is becoming a bit of a trend with Shida as champion. We know Shida can be good – we’ve seen her have great matches in the past – but I’ve got to be honest: Since she’s become champion, I haven’t been a fan of any of her title matches. They all just seem to end out of nowhere without much fanfare and this was no exception. After Abadon no-sells all of Shida’s offence throughout – including a kendo stick shot – Shida just hits the Tamashii… and wins? I get they want to put over the Tamashii as this move guaranteed to end matches, but it’s currently at the expense of building neatly-paced stories and matches for her. Hopefully, her next title match is a bit more enthralling because otherwise, I think I’d like to see someone else get a shot at heading the division.

Kenny Omega defeats Rey Fenix via Pinfall to retain the AEW World Championship, Bullet Club Reunites

  • The main event starts off with a high-pace with both men exchanging hurricanranas, knife-edge chops and dives. Omega firmly gained control of the match after hitting a german suplex on the outside before dropping Fenix on the apron and barricade with two back suplexes.
  • Omega hits the Kotaro Crusher for a 2-count before getting into a chop exchange with Fenix which Fenix gets the better of. Fenix hits a double springboard dropkick before hitting a Tope Con Hiro.
  • Omega tries for You Can’t Escape but Fenix escapes and hits a moonsault german suplex from the middle rope for a near-fall. He follows it up with a diving foot stomp before we cut back to commerical.
  • We cut back to a back-and-forth exchange between the two before attempting a corkscrew springboard move, which Omega counters with a knee strike. Omega hits a V-Trigger for a near-fall before hitting a second, which Fenix counters into the reverse frankensteiner.
  • Callis distracts Fenix which allows Omega to hit a knee strike. Fenix counters with one of his own before hitting an outside-in cutter on the champion for a near-fall. Fenix hits the Fire Thunder Driver but Omega STILL kicked out.
  • Fenix tries for an Eddie Guerrero-esque Frog Splash but Omega gets his knees up. Fenix tries for a dive but Omega counters into a tiger driver for a very close near-fall. Omega hits a third V-Trigger before retaining the title with the One Winged Angel.
  • After the match, Callis tells Omega to finish Fenix off but Moxley makes the save with a barbed wire bat.
  • The Good Brothers made their AEW debut – with their IMPACT Tag Team Championships round their waist – and beat down Moxley. Several AEW roster members try to run in to save the former champion, but the trio took them down.
  • Eventually, the Young Bucks come out and look like they’re going to help but they end up superkicking the roster members too.
  • The show ends with Kenny Omega, The Good Brothers and The Young Bucks collectively doing the Two Sweet, indicating a Bullet Club reunion.

Analysis: A match of the year contender and we’re not even a week into the new year! Omega and Fenix pulled out all the stops to deliver one of the best AEW World Championship defences ever! Despite there not being a chance Fenix would win, there were multiple times I thought the Lucha Brother had dethroned Omega but ultimately it was not to bed. What was even more stunning, however, was the post-match angle which saw the debut of IMPACT Tag Team Champions The Good Brothers and what looks like a reunion of sorts between Omega, the Good Brothers and The Young Bucks!

I don’t think this is a full-on heel turn for the AEW World Tag Team Champions as they were very much faces in their confrontation with SCU after the show’s opener but more like reluctant tweeners. Loads of possibilities with the cliffhanger and I’m excited for ALL of them.

And that was night 1 of AEW Dynamite New Year’s Smash!

Being honest, I thought this was an above-average show until the main event – which might be one of the best AEW Dynamite main events ever. Omega and Fenix really pulled out all the stops and the post-match angle was a shocker for the ages.

I wasn’t a fan of Shida vs Abadon and it’s getting to the stage now where I’m somewhat bored with Shida as champion. We know she can be great, but I don’t think she’s delivered like she used to since becoming champion. Hopefully, her next feud is a little more enthralling.
