It seems talks for ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin to take on CM Punk are still in the very early stages.

Earlier this week, a report emerged that CM Punk and WWE have been in discussions regarding a possible match between Punk and Steve Austin. The two men last appeared on-screen together back in 2012 during a promotion video for the WWE ’13 video game, where their tense confrontation sparked hopes of a potential rivalry someday.

While it was noted that there are “many ideas” floating between the two sides and that WWE sources are “optimistic” that the dream match could happen, it appears that the talks are less serious than first thought.

During the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that he heard from several WWE sources who claimed that the possibility hasn’t been discussed to a serious degree. However, he added that this doesn’t mean that the match isn’t possible.

“As soon as that story came out, I heard from a bunch of people who were pretty close in, and they basically said, ‘Probably shouldn’t be doing that one or worrying about that one.’ Basically, it’s not anything that anyone’s talked about to any degree. I mean, it could happen, and it makes sense.”

Steve Austin Has Not Been Approached About Facing CM Punk

Meltzer went on to report that Austin himself hasn’t been approached regarding the talks and has yet to discuss, let alone agree to, him and Punk having a match.

“As of right now, he hasn’t been approached. He’s not in. I’m not saying he won’t be and that is not their direction. I’m not saying that’s like some people thought the same thing you did. ‘Hey, maybe we could do it’…..I would just say it’s premature. I wouldn’t say it’s never going to happen [either].”

Recently, Eric Bischoff has given his thoughts on the potential match between Steve Austin and CM Punk, questioning if Austin is physically in a place where he would want to compete in a full bout.

In regards to CM Punk, a WWE Hall of Famer is cautious over the return to the company.
