CM Punk wasn’t destined for a rivalry with MJF if he’d stayed with AEW.
Following an incident backstage at AEW All In involving Jack Perry and Tony Khan, CM Punk was fired, bringing to an end his controversial run with the company that began in August 2021.
Punk’s departure came just days before All Out and caused something of a scramble as the star was removed from the card. This led to Bryan Danielson returning from injury to face Ricky Starks.
A new report has given an update on some of the longer-term plans that were impacted by Punk’s explosive exit. The report from Fightful Select notes that while plans changed, one major program didn’t.
Despite Punk being billed as the “Real World Champion,” there were no plans for him to enter into a rivalry with AEW World Champion MJF. Samoa Joe’s creative had been in place well ahead of time and is playing out as planned on television.
CM Punk Teases WWE Switch
During his first public appearance since being fired by AEW, CM Punk hinted he could be heading back to WWE.
Appearing on the commentary team for CFFC 125, Punk said that he’d got time on his hands for the next two months.
That comment hasn’t gone unnoticed by fans, given that Survivor Series is scheduled to take place in Punk’s hometown of Chicago on November 25th — A little over two months from now.
