Bret Hart Is Not A Fan Of Modern Wrestling, With One Notable Exception

WWE Hall of Famer Bret Hart has raised eyebrows with his comments about the current state of professional wrestling.

In a candid interview with talkSPORT, Bret Hart didn’t hold back, expressing his dissatisfaction with the modern WWE product. He criticised today’s wrestlers, asserting that they lack the storytelling skills that were a hallmark of his era. According to Hart, while contemporary wrestlers showcase incredible athleticism, they struggle to convey a compelling narrative in their matches. He lamented the absence of drama in today’s wrestling, particularly evident to him when he watched WrestleMania.

I think I was a better storyteller than any of the wrestlers they’ve got today. I watched WrestleMania this year and there’s no drama anymore. They do some amazing stuff, there are some incredible athletes, but people don’t know how to tell a story.

Hart’s remarks also reflected on the cyclical nature of wrestling, noting that it will change again as people tire of what he referred to as “phoney” wrestling. He even shared a telling anecdote about watching his historic match with Davey Boy Smith at SummerSlam 1992 in Wembley Stadium with journalists who were almost convinced of its authenticity.

Wrestling has its flows, and it will change again as people get tired of the ‘phoney’ wrestling, I watched my match with Davey Boy at Wembley with some journalists in a bar and they almost bought into it like it was real.

This isn’t the first time Hart has laid criticism on the wrestling world, Bret Hart has also criticised big wrestling stars such as Bill Goldberg in the past as well as many others.

Which Modern Wrestlers Does Bret Hart Like?

Bret Hart’s concern extends to the potential dilution of the dramatic element in professional wrestling due to the constant output of WWE’s programming. Nevertheless, amidst his critique, Hart did offer a glimmer of hope, acknowledging the potential for a shift back towards more dramatic storytelling. He pointed to the strong fan reaction to British wrestlers Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate as a sign that the pendulum might be swinging in the other direction.

The fact that fans reacted so strongly to those two British Wrestlers (Pete Dunne and Tyler Bate) shows you it might be going back in the other direction.
