Chris Jericho Details How Main Event Match With Bandido Came Together

Chris Jericho and Bandido

Chris Jericho revealed he’d watch some of Bandido’s matches on YouTube prior to their ROH World Championship clash on AEW Dynamite.

On the September 28th edition of AEW Dynamite, ROH World Champion Chris Jericho defended the title against luchador sensation Bandido. This is after the Mexican star wrestled a match for his promotion Big Lucha and faced travel issues due to Hurricane Ian.

Bandido managed to wow the AEW audience and Tony Khan despite having a busy week beforehand. Khan reportedly offered Bandido a contract following his stellar match with Y2J. A fan video surfaced online showing Bandido hugging the AEW President and shaking his hand before leaving towards the back.

On the latest episode of his podcast “Talk Is Jericho,” the ROH World Champion discussed when he knew he’d be wrestling the luchador sensation in the main event of Dynamite and what he did to prepare for the epic clash. Jericho revealed that Khan personally told asked him to give the kid a shot at the title.

“I thought that was a pretty marquee, name-value match,” Jericho said. “But I had never seen any of his work. I knew that he was kind of hot on the scene and was a guy that had a kind of critical acclaim.”

To scout his opponent, the ROH Champion ended up watching some of Bandido’s matches on YouTube. He came across his battle with Will Ospreay at WrestleCon 19 and some of his bouts against AEW’s Rush.

“I just wrote down some ideas. My goal was to put this guy over and get this kid a contract, as Booker T used to say, but more importantly to make him look like a main event star.”

Fightful reported on October 5th that sources close to Bandido believed he had signed a contract with the company. However, the Mexican star stated during an interview with Mas Lucha that he’s still in talks with AEW and that he also received an offer from WWE.
