“The stories are weak”: Eric Bischoff Slams AEW Storytelling

“You Need To Fire The Audience Up” - Eric Bischoff On Recent AEW Segment

Eric Bischoff says he knows what’s holding AEW back.

On October 10th, AEW Dynamite and NXT went head-to-head with both companies pulling out all the stops. In the end, it was NXT that earned a clear ratings victory following a show that featured appearances from John Cena, LA Knight, Cody Rhodes, Asuka, and even The Undertaker.

The fallout from the clash is still being felt, with Tony Khan claiming an unusual victory despite the ratings.

Speaking on Strictly Business – courtesy of AdFreeShows, Eric Bischoff gave his thoughts on both AEW and NXT. The former WCW boss said that in his opinion, AEW is being held back by a lack of compelling storytelling, describing what’s currently in place as “just an excuse for a match.”

“The stories are weak. People who are the most ardent supporters of AEW, including those in the company. What they refer to as a story is not a story. It’s an excuse for a match. The stories don’t have the arc, the drama, the vulnerability at the right point in time, the self doubt, he right point in time, they don’t have the ingredients that actually make a story there.

What’s referred to as a story to justify a match and what beats there are in an arc are they’re not compelling. Boy meets girl, boy loses girl. boy gets girl back that’s a story nobody’s gonna give a sh*t about it unless you make it a great love story. And you know, I’ve just I’m almost tired of pointing it out because people only want to hear what they want to hear and formatting the show, you know, look, they started. They started off with a hot start, when was the last time we saw Bryan Danielson in action?

Eric Bischoff Takes Aim At Tony Khan

During the same episode, Eric Bischoff also called out Tony Khan for not taking advice. The WWE Hall of Famer said that while Khan clearly loves wrestling, it doesn’t mean he’s good at producing wrestling television. Furthermore, Bischoff claimed that until Khan listens to people within Warner Bros Discovery who are, AEW will struggle to grow its TV audience.
