Rey Mysterio On New WWE Contract: “I Will Keep Wrestling… Until Father Time Catches Up”

WWE veteran, Rey Mysterio has revealed he will remain in WWE for a long time to come after inking a new deal.

Speaking to Sports Illustrated, Mysterio explained:

“We never made the signing of my new deal public, but there is definitely going to be more time to see Rey Mysterio in WWE. I’m going to keep wrestling, at least until Father Time catches up and says, ‘It’s time to go.’”

Mysterio signed with WWE two decades ago in the summer of 2002. He previously wrestled for WCW for six years, wherein he revolutionised American wrestling with his high flying lucha libre style.

In 2019, Mysterio’s son, Dominik also began appearing on WWE television in a featured role. In 2020, he finally shared the ring with his legendary father. On his son following in his footsteps, the former WWE Champion said:

“I am so happy to see my son Dominik doing so well, and it means so much to me to be with him in WWE. When I left WWE [in 2015], I was tired, I was beat and I was going through a phase in my life where I just needed some time off. That time away recharged my batteries.”

The 47-year-old revealed his hiatus from the company gave him the opportunity to assess what was best for his family:

“I sat down with my wife and my kids, and we ultimately made the decision together that it was time for me to come back to WWE. I am thankful for that opportunity because I knew my son wanted to be part of this industry, and I wanted to reopen the door for Dominik to eventually get a foot in the business. WWE has treated me like I had never left, and I am so grateful and truly blessed for that. I’m under WWE’s wings once again, and they’ve seen such potential in Dominik and such a bright future for him.”

Mysterio made his pro-wrestling debut in 1989 at the age of just 14. Despite wrestling for over three decades, the SmackDown star is still a featured part of WWE programming. With his new long term deal, Mysterio’s 32 year career is set to continue for the foreseeable future.
