AEW Match Blasted As The “Worst Match Of The Year”; August 17th Live Wrestling News Round-Up

Edge

Edge Set For Final WWE Match?

On tomorrow night’s episode of Friday Night SmackDown, WWE Hall of Famer Edge is set to clash with Sheamus in what looks to be ‘The Rated R Superstar’s’ final match in the WWE.

Speaking to ET Canada, Edge would confirm that his match tomorrow is the final on his current WWE contract and due to previous that Edge was looking to end his in-ring career in Canada it is very possible that this may be his final match period.

Edge wold comment:

“Here’s what I can honestly say, and this isn’t the answer everyone wants.

I truly don’t know. I really really, with 100% truth can say I don’t know. That’s strange for me, but I don’t. I really don’t. I’ve put some thought into it, but not a lot.

This is the last match on my current contract. I don’t know. I honestly don’t know. I probably won’t know until I get to the locker room that night and decompress, let all the anxiety and tension that I never used to have before I performed, I have now. That’s strange for me and makes it that much harder to do this. I’m going to be 50 in October. It’s not easy anymore. Before, what I used to take for granted to be able to do, now, there is a process and a fallout.

There’s a lot. It’s the dream gig, but it’s getting really hard,” [h/t Fightful]

Orange Cassidy is set for Stadium Stampede action at AEW All In next week but assuming he survives that spectacle then he could be set for a history milestone in AEW.

Cassidy is currently on 29 successful championship defences as AEW International Champion (a record in its own right) but should he defeat his next challenger (yet to be confirmed) then he will become the first person in AEW history to reach 30 successful championship defences.

Brock Lesnar

Shelton Benjamin Reveals What Brock Lesnar Is Really Like Behind The Scenes

Brock Lesnar at WWE SummerSlam

During a recent interview with Chris Van Vliet, Shelton Benjamin has revealed what ‘The Beast’ is really like behind-the-scences.

Speaking with Chris Van Vliet, Benjamin would state:

“Something that you will be shocked to learn. Well, yes, everyone knows the Brock Lesnar persona.

Now, if Brock is your friend he will give you the shirt off his back nice guy in the world fun and cool to hang around with.

That might surprise people how actually cool Brock can be if he likes you, keywords if he likes you. But if he doesn’t like you he’s just he’s what you what you’re seeing on TV that’s not an act.

Like you’re not seeing a different version of Brock. You know, I spoke on this earlier Brock is not acting Brock is not playing a role. Brock is Brock. What you’re seeing that’s real. Brock does not. He’s not social. He doesn’t give a blip.

Like Brock is Brock so don’t get it twisted. And yes, he’s a world destroyer. I call them a juggernaut like Brock is, he’s a bad boy.”

AEW

AEW All In Just 653 Tickets Away From Smashing All Time Gate Record

AEW could make history in the next week.

At the time of writing AEW All In sits at 80,056 tickets sold out of a potential 84,048 (current capacity) which leaves the show just 653 tickets shy of WWE’s record attendance of 80,709 at WrestleMania 32.

This 80,709 reflects the true attendance of WrestleMania 32 and not the inflated 101,763 number that WWE themselves reported.

Should AEW All In surpass WrestleMania 32 it would become officially the largest paid wrestling event in history.

WCW & NJPW’s Collision in Korea is currently the highest attended event of all time with well over 150,000, however, this was a mandatory event for North Korean residents to attend at the time and therefore not a true and fair reflection of WCW or NJPW’s popularity at the time.

You can check out the full ticket details for AEW All In currently via the ever reliable WrestleTix.

Sami Zayn

Injury Update on Sami Zayn

No Plans To Strip Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn Of Tag Team Titles

Following the news that Sami Zayn was the latest superstar to join WWE’s growing injury list, ‘The Underdog from the Underground’ has given fans an update on his status.

Speaking on Out of Character with Ryan Satin, Zayn was asked about his current injury (traumatic olecranon bursitis to the elbow) and the current WWE Unified Tag Team Champion would respond ensuring fans that although the injury looks gruesome, he will be fine.

“So [my elbow] is part of a nagging injury that’s just kind of gotten a little bit worse after this past week’s heinous attacks by JD McDonagh, for which there will be revenge.

But yeah, there have been some little injuries, but knock on wood, thank god, I’m pretty healthy overall. You start to think about this stuff a little bit more as you get older, and you’ve been doing it for 21 years, and you’re like, ‘Oh, there’s definitely not another 21 on the backside of this.’

So you’re definitely closer to the end than the beginning. So maintaining your health and addressing those nagging injuries, I think that’ll become more important. But I still managed to give you a long-winded answer to a very easy question. My elbow’s alright, it’ll be okay. It’s not great, but it will be okay” [h/t Fightful]

Vince McMahon

Vince McMahon "Didn't See Anything" In Christopher Daniels During WWE Run

Christopher Daniels

Jim Ross has revealed that Vince McMahon “didn’t see anything” in Christopher Daniels during The Fallen Angel’s brief WWE run.

Daniels wrestled as an enhancement worker for the WWE between 1998 and 2001.

Despite going on to be one of the most iconic names in TNA  and ROH history, Daniels never made a splash in the larger pond of the WWE and Jim Ross has now revealed why.

Speaking on the latest episode of Grilling JR, Jim Ross would recall Vince McMahon’s perceptions of Daniels during his time with the company.

“Just Vince didn’t see it. He didn’t feel it. You know, Chris is not the biggest dude in the fight, but he’s a tremendous talent.

Very skilled. It’s just that one guy. And I also don’t know. I don’t know what Russo thought of Christopher Daniels. If it had been brought to me, and they said, We want you to hire Christopher Daniels because we have an idea created for him, I’d have no problem with that because he’s a good guy.

He’s a soldier. And he’s a good worker could work a lot of different styles. But that never came across my purview.

I know we brought him in for a tryout and I don’t recall it being bad. He’s kind of a who’s known as kind of a high spot guy. But he could work as well. So just didn’t work out for him. I guess there’s all I can say there. If it had come across my desk and hey, Jr. get a hold of Christopher Daniels we want you to sign him, I would have done it in a heartbeat.”

Jim Ross

Jim Ross Calls Don Callis A "Miserable Pr*ck"

Don Callis makes entrance on AEW Dynamite

Whilst discussing his sit down interview with former AEW Champion Kenny Omega, Jim Ross would recall working with Omega’s former advisor ‘The Jackal’ Don Callis, praising Callis for his genius but noting that he is also a “miserable pr*ck.”

Speaking on the latest episode of Grilling JR, Jim Ross would recalls his previous interactions with Callis noting that the current AEW talent is a hell of a talker and posses a real skill for maximising his minutes on screen.

“I did some commentary with him [Don Callis] on some shows, and realised right away, he’s a hell of a talker.

Now, he may be a miserable prick in real life, and some people would agree with that assessment of Don.

But nobody can disagree with the fact that Don is very intelligent and he thinks for Don. So, you know, old school, how do I get over brother type deal, so that he could talk man from the get go, one of the best talkers. And I thought that would be his calling as a broadcaster, and not as a manager. Not that he couldn’t be a manager, not that he couldn’t do a good job.”

AEW's Texas Chainsaw Massacre Match Dubbed The "Worst Match Of The Year"

What Happened During AEW's Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch On Dynamite

During the August 16th episode of AEW Dynamite Jeff Hardy and Jeff Jarrett clashed in the bizarrely branded “Texas Chainsaw Massacre Deathmatch” and fans were not keen on the affair.

The match, sponsored by the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre video game, featured weapons, fake blood, chainsaws and Leatherface themselves.

The match would end with Leatherface chasing a blood soaked Karen Jarrett backstage providing the distraction needed for Jay Lethal and Santam Singh to take out Jeff Hardy via a hammer strike and chokeslam combination and presenting Jeff Jarrett with the win.

In the hours after the match fans have taken to Twitter in their thousands to blast the match with many going as far to dub the bout the “worst match of the year” an award seemingly awarded to WWE’s own bizarre sponsored match the Mountain Dew Pitch Black match between LA Knight and Bray Wyatt.

“Unironically contender for worst match of the year” – @Seur101

Dynamite tonight was alright, but that Texas Chainsaw Massacre match.

If there was ever a contender from AEW that could rival the Pitch Black match from WWE as the worst match of the year, that could be it. Lots of talent there, but yeesh.” – @GameShowGumbo

The LA Knight Mountain Dew match is no longer of the worst match of the year thanks to this” – @AustinLavigne

“Worst Match of the Year award winner is all locked up for 2023. Others need not apply.” – @BlueDevil102077
