WWE touts record success from SmackDown in Madison Square Garden

WWE has been on a roll lately, achieving record revenue and attendance at several events lately. The records continue being broken, too, as their episode of WWE SmackDown tonight marks the “highest-grossing” WWE event in MSG history. That’s huge, considering the number of premium live events have been held there, including WrestleMania X and XX.

Incredibly, tonight also marks the “highest-grossing domestic” SmackDown in WWE history. You can see the announcement below:

Title match announced for next week's episode of WWE SmackDown

The WWE SmackDown women’s roster is loaded with talent, and that’s never been clearer than right now. The current WWE Women’s Champion, Asuka, has two viable challengers gunning after her in Charlotte Flair and the former Women’s Champ, Bianca Belair. But in the wings, Ms. Money in the Bank, Iyo Sky, showed that she also has her sights set on cashing in on Asuka when the time is right.

Next week, we will see the next chapter in this developing rivalry between the three when Belair challenges for Asuka’s Women’s Championship in one-on-one action. I’ve got a feeling there will be a bit of interference in this one.

You can see the current card for the 7/14 episode of WWE SmackDown below:

  • WWE Women’s Championship: Asuka (c) vs. Bianca Belair
Jey Uso

Jey Uso wants revenge on The Tribal Chief

Reigns, Solo, and Heyman have returned to the ring. Reigns grabs the microphone and he obviously didn’t make his point clear the first time, so they’ll do it again. Reigns tells all of New York to acknowledge him! Here comes Jey!!! He’s coming down from the audience as Reigns and Solo get ready for him. Jey leaps over the ring barricade and splashes into Solo. He slams his face into the ring post and then turns his attention to Reigns.

Jey has a bit of a breakdown and then grabs a chair and goes after Reigns. He beats Roman to the strike and smacks him with the chair. Solo tries to intercept, allowing Reigns to slither away as Jey annihilates Solo with a steel chair in the center of the ring. Jey is fed up! He tosses the chair out of the ring with force and then holds the WWE Universal Championship as he asks Roman, “It’s like that?” After what he did to Jimmy, Jey says he’s got to get him now. He wants Reigns one-on-one, and he tells him he better accept his challenge so he can whoop his a*s one more time.

Edge

Edge impressed with Grayson Waller's performance tonight

Edge grabs a microphone and tells Waller that he swam. He tosses it back at Grayson and then walks up the ramp.

Backstage, we see Roman Reigns and Solo Sikoa. Paul Heyman walks up to Roman and tells him that Jey Uso is back in Madison Square Garden and looking for Reigns. Tribal Chief says he won’t have to look long because he’ll be in the ring waiting for him.

Back from the commercial break, Edge is in control with forearms, but then Waller catches him in the corner with a tornado DDT for a close two count. He hits some grounded strikes and a headlock, followed by some knees to Edge’s head. He yells out taunts while Edge rallies with the audience. Edge punches Waller in the gut and hits some forearms to his head.

Edge off the ropes, but Waller knees him in the gut and stops Edge again. He wrenches back with a crossface and then elbow drops Edge to the back. Edge jumps up and stops Waller on the top rope. He joins him on top and goes for a superplex, but Waller blocks it and throws him face-first off of the ropes. Waller goes for a springboard elbow but Edge puts his knees up and jabs Waller in the ribs. Edge gets to his feet and uses a big boot and a flapjack. Waller rolls to the apron but Edge gets under him and powerbomb him on the floor.

Michael Cole says there’s breaking news, and Jey Uso is back in the arena!

Back to the match, Edge climbs to the top rope and delivers a beautiful crossbody for another close two count. Edge looks surprised Waller is staying in this as long as he has so far! Edge gets Waller back to his feet and tries for a Edgecution, but Waller gets out of it and delivers a beautiful Twisting Unprettier for a two! Frustrated, Waller reigns down forearms to the back of Edge’s head.

Waller stomps away at Edge as he says he “runs this.” Edge delivers some elbows, but he eats a spinning elbow strike from Waller for another close two! How will this one end?! Edge hits the Edgecution out of nowhere! Edge calls for the spear, but Waller ducks it and Edge’s head collides with the second turnbuckle. Waller preps for the rolling stunner, but Edge catches him in mid-air with a sick spear! Edge wins!!

Edge

Edge vs. Grayson Waller

Grayson Waller makes his entrance next, schmoozing it up on the way to his SmackDown wrestling debut. The bell rings! The crowd is hyped for Edge tonight! The two men lock up, with Edge trying for a headlock, but Waller ducks it. Edge with two shoulder tackles and a gutbuster to the loudmouth. Edge hits another! He punts Waller in the abdomen and then delivers a gutwrench suplex. Clubby blows follow as the crowd chants, “You still got it!”

Waller returns with some rights and an Irish whip. He leaps over Edge, but The Rated R Superstar comes right back with a Fallaway Slam. Edge runs in for the spear but Waller jumps up at the last second and knees him in the face. Waller tosses Edge out of the ring and then slides out of the ring and delivers a clothesline.

Charlotte Flair runs down next, where Belair meets her on the ramp. Belair and Charlotte trade blows as Asuka hits a baseball slide. Bayley and Iyo Sky come out of nowhere! Bayley uses a Rose Plant, and then Iyo Sky uses the moonsault. She wants to cash in, but Belair and Flair stop her!

Asuka escapes safely, but dang, that was a close one! Sky came out of nowhere.

Kross uses the Kross Hammer early on and then goes for the Kross Jacket right away. Styles blocks with a lawbreaker and then a pele kick. Styles gets put on the apron where he is about to go for a Phenomenal Forearm, but Scarlett grabs his foot. Minchin runs over and attacks Scarlett.

Edge

Edge appears on The Grayson Waller Effect with a surprise

Grayson Waller welcomes MSG to his talk show, and says he knows they’re thinking about how handsome he is but it’s not about him tonight. He says there’s nothing bigger than the announcement his guest has tonight: Edge! Here comes “The Rated R Superstar!”

Edge hypes up the crowd and says it’s been a steamy Summer in NYC. Waller interrupts him, telling Edge to reveal his major announcement to the world. Edge asks him what he’s talking about. He says it’s the 25th anniversary of his career in WWE and he’s going to celebrate that here tonight and next month in Toronto. Waller pushes for him to tell them more, asking why he’s back in WWE if he has the money and life all set.

Edge says it’s because of the fans. He says he wants to talk to MSG, recalling that his first pay-per-view with this company was back at SummerSlam 1998. He remembers how the night went, and how he did a leap over the top rope that showed him the New York crowd was accepting him. Edge says New York is a city full of hard workers and big dreamers, which describes him to this day. That’s why Edge and NY work together.

Waller says that’s why it’s so exciting that Edge is announcing his retirement! He tells the fans to thank him for everything he’s done because it’s the last time he’s going to be in MSG. Edge takes a moment. He tells Waller that he’s had major guests two weeks in a row, so someone sees something in him, but he has been here for just a moment. Edge tells Waller that he’s paddling into deep waters. He’s not going to retire! In fact, Edge is going to be in the main event of the show tonight when he battles Grayson Waller!

Austin Theory

Theory gets some help to steal the win!

Sheamus hits several clotheslines in the corner, followed by a body slam. He wants the Celtic Cross, but Theory hops out and jumps to the ring apron. He hangs Theory up on the top rope and then wants the rolling dropkick, but Sheamus turns it into a powerbomb. Theory is about to tap to a cloverleaf, but Pretty Deadly runs down and interrupts the bout. Sheamus beats them down when Theory suddenly comes in with the rolling dropkick. He tries for the A-Town Dow, but Sheamus dodges and knees Theory for a close two.

The Brawling Brutes come down and clear out Pretty Deadly as Sheamus sets up in the corner. Sheamus with a brogue kick on Kit Wilson on the apron, which allows Theory to roll Sheamus up and use the tights for the win.

Austin Theory

Austin Theory stays on the offense

We come back to Sheamus in control, climbing to the top rope to stay on the momentum. Theory meets him there with rights and then takes him to the apron, trying to steal the ten beats of the Bodhran. He gets three in and is elbowed in the face. Sheamus clotheslines Theory and then leaps over the top rope with a soaring shoulder tackle.

Sheamus climbs back to the top and delivers a diving knee for a close two-count from the Champ. Theory battles out of another Irish Curse Backbreaker and then runs off the ropes with a spinning elbow. Theory with stomps and then a big jumping stomp, followed by a climb to the top rope. Sheamus runs over and uppercuts him. Rights follow, and then Sheamus climbs to the second rope and nails some clubby blows on the Champ.

Sheamus wants the White Noise from the top, but Theory slithers out, punches him in the kidneys, and then hits a spin-out slam for another close two!

Sheamus

Austin Theory vs. Sheamus

Sheamus enters first, followed by the U.S. Champion, Theory. The bell rings, and this one is for the belt!

Sheamus instantly powers Shemaus into the corner and rains down right hands. He puts Shemaus in the Fireman’s Carry but Theory escapes. Irish Curse backbreaker from Sheamus! He clotheslines Theory out of the ring and then comes off of the top rope with a clothesline.

Jimmy Uso

Jimmy Uso is stretchered out of the arena

Back from the break, Jimmy Uso has been stretchered out to an ambulance with Jey by his side, telling him he’s not going anywhere. We then see a replay of what happened moments ago. Adam Pearce and other WWE SmackDown stars watch on as The Usos leave in the ambulance.

Next up is Sheamus vs. Austin Theory!

Roman Reigns

Roman Reigns says he's done being The Tribal Chief but it's a swerve

We return from the break with Roman in the center of the ring, looking over his shoulder at The Usos. Heyman hands Roman a microphone as the crowd chants, “You got pinned!” Reigns is clearly pissed off but gives his signature, “Acknowledge me,” regardless. He tells them they’re right, and he got pinned, but last time he checked, he’s still Tribal Chief. He says Jey and Jimmy aren’t the Tribal Chief, so he’s wondering why he’s here tonight.

If Roman didn’t call for Tribal Court, it’s not legitimate. He asks who has the authority to put him on trial right now. Jimmy speaks up, telling Reigns it’s not going to happen this time — they’re not going to be manipulated like last time. The trial begins with exhibit A being shown. It’s footage of when Reigns would regularly disrespect The Usos, talking down to them and getting physical with them in his abusive fashion. It even shows his attack on Paul Heyman in the past.

Reigns looks a bit distressed when we return to the live show. He grins as the crowd chants, “You f*cked up!” He denies that. He says that the video doesn’t show who he is. Reigns says that’s who he was forced to be in the situation. He claims he didn’t want to lower himself and do all of that, but he did it for The Usos and the audience. “Bulls*it!” the crowd chants. Reigns says he was a WrestleMania main event long before The Bloodline. They needed him and he bent his moral compass for the family. He asks how they could compile his worst moments as his daughter watches on in the back, making her confused about who he is.

Reigns claims he takes care of The Usos’ families and their kids while he has his own five at home. He says he doesn’t need this anymore: the money, the stardom, any of it. If this is what Jey wants, fine. He doesn’t want it, and he doesn’t need it. Reigns says he’s done. He doesn’t want it anymore and Jey Uso can have it. Reigns drops the mic and stares down Jey. Roman takes off the lei The Wild Samoans gifted him and grits his teeth. Reigns grows emotional as he puts the lei onto Jey. He takes off the Undisputed WWE Universal Title and then gets down on his knees and weeps in front of Jey. THIS IS CRAZY RIGHT NOW!!!

Jey consoles Roman as Reigns turns and low-blows him! The lei fell off in the process, too. Jimmy Uso attacks Roman, triggering Solo to break them up. The lei rests in between Jey, Roman, and Solo. Sikoa Samoan Spikes Jimmy and then picks up the lei as the crowd encourages him to put it on. He hesitates, but seems like he’s about to give it to Roman as Jey attacked them. Solo with a uranage to drill Jey into the mat. Reigns Superman Punches Jimmy and then kicks him out to ringside. Solo and Roman clear off the announce table and continue the assault on Jimmy. Jey tries to help, but they turn the attack to him and tie his arms up in the ropes so he’s forced to watch Jimmy get blasted in the face with the Universal WWE Title.

Roman slams the title in Jimmy’s face over and over and then throws him into the ring steps. He takes them apart and slams one end into Jimmy’s face, but he’s not done yet; Reigns sets him upright on the barricade and then slams the steel steps into his head. Jey kicks Solo away from him and then goes after Roman, but he ends up Samoan Spiked on top of the steel steps. Jey’s tossed over the announce table and into the chairs as Roman barks, “Finish him!” Solo picks up Jimmy and lays him out on the table as Roman tosses the office chairs at a downed Jey.

Solo leaps off of the ring barricade and smashes through Jimmy and the table to finish the attack. What a start to SmackDown!

Roman Reigns

The Trial of Roman Reigns Begins

The Usos get down to the ring with their microphones as the crowd gives them an, “Usos!” chant. Jey tells MSG that The Usos are now in their city, with Jimmy saying it feels good. They recall how everyone has said Roman Reigns is unbeatable, but at Money in the Bank, he got beat. Here comes Paul Heyman with Solo Sikoa!

Heyman introduces himself as he and Solo make it down to ringside. They enter and Sikoa stares down his brothers. Heyman says he’s presenting evidence for this trial, but The Usos tell him to shut up. Heyman says there is only one person in WWE that can ever get him to stop talking, but at that very moment, Solo Sikoa covers the mic with his hand and tosses it out of the ring. He stares down The Usos as Heyman looks on in shock. Reigns’ music hits and he’s on the way down to the ring!

Knight is also killing the game in terms of merchandise sales.

Rob Van Dam

Rob Van Dam On What ECW Legend He Would Loved To Have Wrestled

Former WWE Champion Rob Van Dam has been wrestling for over three decades, but even with such a storied past, there are some pro wrestlers even he missed out on facing. One such competitor was ECW legend Mike Awesome. During a new episode of “1 of a Kind with RVD,” Van Dam talked about Awesome’s unique moveset for being such a big man and how it brought on some criticisms.

“He wasn’t doing a bunch of backflips and landing on his feet and stuff like that. He wasn’t taking clotheslines and wanting to do a flipping bump. So you know to that I got to say it was amazing that he would do that move. He didn’t do very many flying moves and that’s what made him still look like a really big guy doing the moves that looked action packed, violent, hurtful, damaging, and it was. I can’t believe that somebody would say that he didn’t wrestle like a big guy.”

Vince McMahon

Vince McMahon Arrives At WWE SmackDown In Madison Square Garden

For the portion of the WWE Universe wondering, yes, Vince McMahon is indeed present for tonight’s episode of WWE SmackDown. PWInsider notes that he arrived around 5:40 pm EST at Madison Square Garden arena.

There were recent reports that claimed Vince’s influence backstage and creatively will only grow as the merger between UFC and WWE becomes official later this year. Stay tuned for updates on McMahon’s influence on tonight’s episode of SmackDown!

Elton Prince

Pretty Deadly knows where they want to go as a part of WWE's Tag Team Division

Pretty Deadly’s Kit Wilson and Elton prince are making a name for themselves in record time since being drafted to WWE SmackDown. Although they were unsuccessful in their efforts, the two men challenged for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championships on last Friday’s SmackDown and put on an exciting bout with current Champions Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens.

During an interview with The Run-In with Ariel Helwani , the duo acknowledged their growth while noting their aim as a part of the WWE tag team division.

“Yes boy! I mean, this is always what we’ve been shooting for. Since getting signed, we were like, we want this. When we joined NXT UK, we won the championships. Then we kind of went to NXT, and we’re like, ‘You know what? We want every single tag team title going,’ and that’s still the goal. We’re still heading towards there. Just talking about the division in general, amazing that it main-evented WrestleMania night one. That’s the direction we want to head in, so it’s a goal that we want to get to and feel like we are gonna get to, but it’s another thing getting there. I’m just excited,” Wilson said. (h/t Fightful)

Grayson Waller

Grayson Waller traverses New York in search of Madison Square Garden

Grayson Waller has a silver tongue and is using it to propel himself to stardom on the WWE SmackDown roster. That includes this evening, when Waller hosts the returning WWE Hall of Famer, Edge, on The Waller Effect talk show. To get a true New York experience, Waller traveled to Madison Square Garden Arena via the subway system.

Throughout the video, he rides the subway, chats with some of the locals, and tries a hot dog that he makes clear he’s not too fond of.

So, here we are: Times Square! I’ve heard so much about it. I’ve heard a lot about the smell, too, and it lives up to expectations. But I thought, what better way to properly live like a New Yorker than to take the subway [to Madison Square Garden].”

Cody Rhodes

Cody Rhodes On The Words Of Wisdom He Received From John Cena

Cody Rhodes continues his pursuit of becoming a WWE World Champion someday, but for now, he’s been focused on stars like Brock Lesnar and Judgment Day’s Dominik Mysterio. Following his win over the latter at Saturday’s Money in the Bank premium live event, Rhodes spoke at the following press conference about how one of the greatest of all-time, John Cena, gave him words of advice on how the word “champ” manifests itself in different ways.

“One of the things that John Cena told me. He said, ‘You could be the champ without wearing the title, but you have to be honest with yourself.’ Look at the numbers everywhere you go. Look at the numbers on everything you put out. If they’re telling you it’s cruising and it’s going, because there is a difference between soup du jour and equity in someone we’ve gotten behind and has earned your trust and all of that. If those numbers support that, then you’re on the right path. I have been blessed that has been the case.”

Matt Riddle and Girlfriend Misha Montana Expecting Their First Child

Riddle has had some standout matches lately, including his attempt at capturing Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship at Money in the Bank last Saturday. But even though Riddle may not be wearing Intercontinental Gold after their encounter, the “original bro” has something else to look forward to.

Riddle’s girlfriend, adult film star Misha Montana, revealed via Twitter that she and Riddle are expecting their first child this December. It appears she even went to a recent WWE event with a sign that said, “Bro, I’m pregnant.”

Congratulations to Riddle and Misha Montana!

Edge

Edge reflects on what Madison Square Garden means to him ahead of WWE SmackDown return

WWE and Madison Square Garden have grown synonymous over time, all starting when WWWF began running monthly shows there in the 60s. Major premium live events would follow, like WrestleMania X, WrestleMania XX, various SummerSlams, Survivor Series, and Royal Rumbles.

SummerSlam 1998 at The Garden was a significant year for WWE Hall of Famer Edge, considering this was the time he got his first big break with WWE. Ahead of his return to MSG tonight, Edge spoke a bit about what the arena means to him and the memories he created there.

It never gets old. It really, really never gets old. I mean, honestly, SummerSlam ’98 was massive because it was my first opportunity on pay-per-view. And to get it at SummerSlam, at Madison Square Garden. I look back now and I realize how amazing that was, what a great opoortunity that was– it was huge. I think really kicking off my career here was a special place to do it.”
