Edge Almost Became All Elite Before 2020 WWE Return

Edge Adam Copeland

Edge was determined to finish his career on his terms and if WWE would not clear him to compete, he considered going to AEW. Ultimately, Edge discussed his desire to return with Vince McMahon who said that it would only be right if it happened under the WWE umbrella.

Edge’s 2020 return in the Royal Rumble Match was considered something of a miracle. After nearly a decade on the shelf due to being medically disqualified from in-ring competition, “The Master Manipulator” worked his ass off, displaying grit and determination, to make it back to the ring and finish his career on his terms. Now, a new report suggests that the WWE Hall of Famer would have gone to AEW if WWE did not clear him.

Details On Edge’s WWE Contract And Early Talks With AEW

A new report from Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful Select (subscription required) notes that the WWE Hall of Famer “had talks” with AEW before his 2020 return. It is also noted that it had initially been reported in 2020 that Copeland signed a three-year contract for 25 appearances and five matches each year.

In 2021 alone, “The Ultimate Opportunist” has competed in ten matches and he has competed in six matches this year. Therefore, that original report was either incorrect or his contract was amended along the way.

While it is not certain when Edge’s contract will come to an end, “The Rated R Superstar” himself stated back on August 22 in his hometown of Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that the next time WWE comes to Toronto, he feels as though that would be a good place to say goodbye to his hometown crowd.

Edge has not wrestled since his “I Quit Match” against Finn Balor at WWE Extreme Rules 2022.

Inside The Ropes will continue to monitor and report any updates regarding Edge’s contract status and any impending return to the ring.
