SCU Christopher Daniels Frankie Kazarian Scorpio Sky on AEW Dark

SoCal Uncensored became the first-ever AEW World Tag Team Champions in October of 2019. The duo of Scorpio Sky and Frankie Kazarian defeated the Lucha Bros in the finals of a tournament on the special Halloween edition of Dynamite. The tournament featured the promotion’s best tag teams, including The Young Bucks, Private Party, and Best Friends, but it was SCU ultimately came out on top.

Despite being experienced, talented, and incredibly over with the fans, they were certainly a surprise choice for the first-ever tag team champions. As champions the duo had prominent and exciting title defences against the likes of The Young Bucks and the Inner Circle’s Chris Jericho and Sammy Guevera before they dropped the titles to, Adam Page and Kenny Omega after just 83 days.

While SCU’s reign may not be remembered for its length, it will always be cherished for its significance. They were the first team to hold the AEW World Tag Team Championships, and they helped to establish the division as one of the best in the world.

2nd World Tag Team Champions – Kenny Omega & Hangman Adam Page

  • Number of reigns: 1
  • Reign timeline: 01.21.2020 – 09.05.2020

Kenny Omega & Hangman Adam Page

The makeshift duo of Kenny Omega and Adam Page became the World Tag Team Champions on January 21, 2020, by defeating SoCal Uncensored on the Jericho Cruise. The two members of the Elite joined forces following unsuccessful starts to their respective AEW careers. Not only were they an extremely effective team putting together a number of wins, and earning their way into title contention, but they also possessed great chemistry.

As champions, Omega and Hangman continued to deliver stellar matches, including the classic bout against The Young Bucks at AEW Revolution 2020. Widely regarded as one of the best tag team matches of all time, it also planted the seeds of dissent among The Elite, which would blossom into the promotion’s best storyline.

Omega and Hangman World Tag Team Championship reign lasted for most of 2020 and was a major success. They were one of the most popular teams in the company, and their matches were always highly anticipated. They also helped elevate the AEW tag team division, which was still in its early stages.

ITR 50 FTR

FTR are one of the most respected tag teams in professional wrestling, so when AEW’s tag division eclipsed WWE’s it was only a matter of time before they jumped ship. Prior to doing so, the duo had an online rivalry with the Young Bucks over who was the best team in the world, so when they joined their promotion the anticipation was high for the long-awaited match.

The duo made their debut for the company in 2020 during the empty arena era and immediately made an impact. Cash and Dax racked up victories on their way to facing and defeating Omega and Page for the titles at All Out. FTR’s two-month title reign was capped off by a dream match against the Young Bucks at Full Gear. The two teams, widely considered to be the best of the last decade, put on a classic tag team wrestling match that paid homage to great teams of yesteryear.

After losing the tag team titles, Wheeler and Harwood waited three long years to get their hands on them again. On April 5th, 2023, they put their careers on the line against the Gunns in a bid to reclaim the championships, and they emerged victorious.

Their second title run saw the duo reclaim their ‘Top Guy’ status. During the reign, FTR defended the titles against Bullet Club Gold, MJF & Adam Cole, The Young Bucks and Aussie Open in classic tag team matches.

This string of hard-hitting defences eventually took its toll on the team and they lost the title in a shocking 4-minute loss to Ricky Starks and Big Bill on the October 7th edition of Collision.

The Young Bucks

The Young Bucks are the reason AEW placed such a strong emphasis on its tag team division from the very beginning. The brothers Jackson made it clear that tag team wrestling would be the thing that set the promotion apart from other companies. So, when they were not crowned AEW’s first-ever champions it left a lot of fans scratching their heads.

Despite not wearing the gold, the Bucks remained a focal of the division. At Revolution 2020, they faced their Elite stablemates, Kenny Omega and Hangman Page, for the tag titles in a match that is widely regarded as one of the best in AEW history. The Bucks eventually claimed championship victory when they defeated FTR in a dream match between two of the best tag teams in the world.

As champions, they channelled the heel attitude that made them famous and joined forces with World Champion Kenny Omega and former Bullet Club members the Good Brothers to form the Super Elite. The crew ran roughshod over the company while the tag champs had successful defences against the likes of SCU, the Inner Circle, Eddie Kingston and Jon Moxley. The first title run came to an end inside a crazy Steel Cage match against their longtime rival Lucha Bros.

The brothers became the promotion’s first two-time tag team champions in an exciting Ladder Match against Jurassic Express, but their second reign was shorter than their first, as they lost the titles in their first defence just 28 days later.

5th World Tag Team Champions – The Lucha Bros.

Fenix and Penta

From AEW’s early days, the Lucha Bros were positioned as one of the top teams in the company and regularly mixed it up with the Young Bucks before the promotion had established its division with tag team titles.

Once AEW introduced its tag team championships the duo missed out on the opportunity to become the inugural champions losing out to SCU in the tournament finals. They would remain a steady part of the division despite performing as singles competitors and challenging for the singles titles.

They reignited their longtime rivalry with the Jackson brothers before stepping into a Steel Cage to finally get their hands on tag team gold in an outing considered as one of the company’s best. Their reign was highlighted by two great matches against FTR before they lost the belts to Jurassic Express in early 2022.

AEW Tag Team Champion Jurassic Express

The boy and his dinosaur were one of AEW’s most unique acts. They became a popular fixture in the tag team division but it wasn’t until they secured the managerial/mentorship services of Christian Cage that they began to find success within it.

With Cage to guide them in the right direction, they fought their way into title contention and ultimately tag team gold. Jungle Boy and Luchasaurus defeated the Lucha Bros for the championships ending their 122 run in the process.

Following the win Jurassic Express went on to hold the titles for 161 days, successfully defending them a total of seven times. Most notable of those defences was a gauntlet of triple threats, first defending their AEW Tag Team Titles against reDRagon and The Young Bucks, and then against Swerve In Our Glory and Team Taz. They finally lost the titles in a ladder match against The Young Bucks. After the match, Christian Cage turned on Jungle Boy, attacking him with a chair and breaking up the much-loved team.

Swerve In Our Glory Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland celebrate as AEW World Tag Team Champions AEW Fyter Fest 2022

Swerve Strickland and Keith Lee both debuted for AEW in 2022 and despite coming in with a tonne of buzz and fanfare they both found themselves with little opportunity in singles competition. The duo then began teaming together during a feud against Team Taz and Swerve In Our Glory was born.

They worked very well together and struck a chord with the AEW fanbase, who urged them to succeed. It was clear they had something to prove and made sure their performances delivered every time they stepped into action.

They went from a makeshift tandem to strong title contenders, but their personalities began to clash and cracks began to appear in the partnership. However, they were able to set aside their differences and score a surprise victory in a three-way tag match with the championship on the line and ending the Young Bucks’ second title reign. Their 70-day tag team title reign was defined by two matches against The Acclaimed culminating in a title change at AEW Grand Slam 2022.

The Acclaimed Max Caster Anthony Bowens celebrate with AEW World Tag Team Titles on AEW Grand Slam Dynamite 2022

AEW’s resident rappers are one of the promotion’s greatest success stories. Initially put together as a team by Tony Khan in 2020 the two youngsters grew to be one of wrestling’s breakout acts in 2022. After a lengthy spell as cocky yet entertaining heels, they soon began to gather fan support with their fun chemistry, and stand-out entrance. But it was the addition of Billy “Daddy Ass” Gunn as their manager that pushed them into the stratosphere.

Their meteoric rise saw them go from AEW Dark mainstays to Dynamite regulars to number-one contenders and eventually tag team champions. The scissor-happy duo entered a feud with Swerve In Our Glory and on the second time of asking they scored the victory and captured the titles at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Upon winning the titles their upward trajectory continued as they made several strong defences against Lee and Swerve at Full Gear, FTR on Dynamite, and two title defences against Jeff Jarrett and Jay Lethal in early 2023 before losing the belts to The Gunns.

8th World Tag Team Champions – The Gunns

The Gunns Austin Gunn Colten Gunn

The offspring of Billy Gunn made a name for themselves when they shocked the world to become AEW Tag Team Champions. The brash and cocksure youngsters broke the fan’s hearts when they defeated the Acclaimed to capture the gold.

The duo broke out of their father’s shadow during a feud with Max Caster and Anthony Bowens, which resulted in Billy Gunn abandoning them to join forces with the scissor-happy duo. Without Gunn in their corner, Austin and Colten were able to spread their wings and grow as characters. They leaned fully into obnoxious sides and drew a tonne of heat from the crowd.

Riding the wave of arrogance the Gunns picked up momentum with a string of victories, most notably one over FTR, on their way to the surprise title win. As champions, they successfully defended twice before continuing their rivalry with Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood. A Titles vs. Career match followed and resulted in the future Bullet Club Gold members losing the championships after just 56 days.

Ricky Starks & Big Bill AEW World Tag Team Champions

FTR lost the AEW World Tag Team Championships on October 7th 2023, to Ricky Starks and Big Bill in a shocking 4-minute defeat on AEW Collision.

The Top Guy duo had been champions for 185 days and had successfully defended their titles against all comers. However, they were coming into the match against Starks and Bill banged up, having just had a physically demanding match against Aussie Open at WrestleDream.

Starks and Bill got the jump on the champions right away, attacking Wheeler early on before putting him through the announce table, leaving Harwood to defend the titles on his own.

Harwood fought valiantly, but he was no match for the two-on-one assault from Starks and Bill. He was eventually defeated after several choke slams before Starks hit him with a spear.
