Tony Khan Open To More NJPW Championships Being Defended On AEW TV

Tony Khan has no issues with more NJPW title matches taking place on AEW or ROH TV.

With AEW being very open to work with other promotions, championships from New Japan and AAA have previously been defended on weekly TV and pay-per-views. This is in addition to ROH Championship matches frequently taking place on AEW programming, as Khan is also the owner of Ring of Honor and has multiple AEW stars currently holding the top championships.

Following Will Ospreay’s IWGP United States and United Kingdom Championships being destroyed at the Power Struggle pay-per-view back in November, NJPW announced that they will be crowning an inaugural IWGP Global Champion at Wrestle Kingdom 18. The new title is part of a grander expansion strategy by New Japan, looking to reach an even wider audience next year. As such, there are plans for the Global Championship to be defended around the world across multiple promotions. With this in mind, expect the new championship to be defended on Khan’s shows next year.

Speaking on the media call ahead of ROH Final Battle, Tony Khan was asked if the Global Championship would be a part of AEW or ROH programming. Khan responded that much like any of the other championships in New Japan, the Global Championship could be defended on any of his shows:

“I’d certainly be open to having any of New Japan’s great champions defending the title in AEW or ROH or any promotion. I think that’s great. New Japan Pro-Wrestling has a really, really exciting roster, and they have some of the best wrestlers, and we have a really exciting opportunity, going forward, to present, what I believe, is a unified champion across the Triple Crown.

With any New Japan champion, we would certainly welcome them to compete as part of the same spirit of competition and partnership with New Japan. We’re excited about that news and it certainly creates another exciting opportunity in the world of pro wrestling with the great roster New Japan offers,” he said.

As well as being open to have NJPW Titles being defended on his shows, Tony Khan has introduced another title for ROH in the form of the Women’s TV Championship.

Tony Khan Addresses The State Of ROH Tag Titles

At the time of writing, MJF and Adam Cole remain the ROH Tag Team Champions despite the fact that Cole is recovering from ankle surgery and MJF is dealing with multiple injuries. With Cole showing no definitive sign of return in the near future, Tony Khan also stated in the media call that he has considered vacating the ROH Tag Titles.
